Garden Journal November 2018

in gardenjournal2018 •  6 years ago  (edited)

Greetings, Steemians! Before I get going on my super hectic day, I wanted to share with you my entry for the Garden Journal contest from @simplymike! Link here: https://steemit.com/gardenjournal2018/@simplymike/steemit-community-garden-journal-challenge-7-november-join-or-resteem-and-win

My first tomato, on my plants whose seeds I planted in April, is doing well. Everything I do is in its own time vortex, so it works. I have lots more blooms, though; we'll see if my hand pollenating worked on them.

The Orange Lady sang, so I clipped the marigold heads to see if I could get some seeds:

I got some spider plant cuttings from a neighbor. In all the years of multiple houseplants, I never actually had spider plants! So I'm happy. They're settling in and are a bit darker today; I took this photo a few days ago:

In addition to the seeds I set up outside to stratify over the winter, I picked up some more on my walks. Three acorns that are different from the ones I already planted, some kind of cherry, and a hazel nut, I think (I need to break out my tree guide and double check). These acorns have caps that are kind of fuzzy. :)

Ellie the elm tree and wee baby apple are pretty well dormant now, or close. Almost all of Ellie's leaves are off. I keep trying to put them in her pot so the leaf fall feeds the soil, but they keep blowing out again. I need to stick them under the rocks in her pot, perhaps. :)

That's it from the apartment homestead in the sky! It's fall here but inside, there is always green. <3

Be good, Steemit!

So cool to see you are growing tomatoes indoors. Would you believe me when I say I never thought of that? It would probably prolong the season... Maybe I should give it a go next year. I've never pollinated by hand, though. I know how it's done, but I never tried.\n\nThanks for joining the contest, @phoenixwren

I started them indoors ...then moved them to the balcony ...then back inside. LOL. Maybe come spring, they'll still be going and I'll be moving them back to the balcony. :D

I think that seed on the left is a horse chestnut. We call them conkers here. In the olden days, children would thread them on a piece of string and have conker fights. In turn, each person would let their conker dangle on its string, and the other would try and strike it with their conker. There were lots of techniques to the striking, and soaking of conkers in things like vinegar, purportedly to make them very hard and unbreakable (the object of the fight). I seem to remember they were banned in my school as too dangerous 😱

Oh, you're probably right! I'm used to seeing those in the big fuzzy covers, right? I picked this one up from I don't remember where and didn't recognize it offhand.

Yes, they have big prickly covers - not sure which creatures they're supposed to stick to, they're so heavy!

Nice inside garden. Great tomatoes. It is so rewarding starting plants from seeds. I love it.

Thank you! :)
