Garden Journal May 2019: "You Give Us European Colour Without Sacrifice of Leaves"

in gardenjournal2018 •  6 years ago  (edited)

It's garden journal time again at the end of May - check out @simplymike's invitation here to write about what's a-growing. It's been SO warm here - unseasonably warm. I can't recall it being so warm this late in May ever - we've just come off a whole week or so of 19 to 22/23 degrees celsius. Chilly mornings, granted, but still, very warm and clear days - I am waiting to wear all my woollies but I'm still wearing sandals and tshirts! Crazy. It'd be lovely if it wasn't spooky.

The most exciting thing about the garden at the moment is BANKSIA. They're renowned for flowing in Autumn - it's like another Spring when the Australian natives start flowering!

We've been planting more of them because they seem to do well and don't mind it dry. They get barely ANY water all summer. They are such spectacular flowers, don't you think?

In the vegetable garden, the garlic, broadbeans and some brassicas are starting to do their thing. The marigolds are shining bright - they usually go all winter - and the spring onions are still doing their happy cut and come again growth. We eat the tops and never eat the bottom, so they just keep shooting on up.

All the summer vegetables are truly done now - missing tomatoes and cucumbers, though there are still some banana peppers and chillis hanging on the vines, and a few last green peppers I dont think will ripen now. Lots of chives, parsley, lettuce, vietnamese mint, mint and pakchoy - I seem to alternate between Asian meals with last years garlic, pak choy and spring onions and salads with garden herbs and lettuce at the moment, waiting for the Autumn vegetables to be ready to eat. It's just been so dry there hasn't been a real chance to get stuff growing, but there's rain forecast and we have had a little lately - yay. Although that does mean more WEEDS.

I daren't ask how your gardens are going - as the growning season bursts into life in the Northern Hemisphere I get quite jealous! I have recieved some seeds all the way from Oregon from @sagescrub and some from @quochuy too - some purple okra - can't wait to sow them in a few months. I'm looking at our scrap wood pile wondering what we've got to build a greenhouse - how's yours going @digitaldan? Missing the updates! Amazed at all the gardens going here on Steemit - keep 'em coming, and don't forget to use the tag #gardenjournal2018 so we can connect! #homesteading and #homesteaderscoop are also nice tags to use, if you are new and wondering!

Look out for the garden update coming up from Strawbum, one of my chickens - I think she has a slightly different take on what's going on in the Riverflows yard.

Happy Gardening, y'all!

I never saw BANKSIA before , just came to know about it from your post... Their conical shape really attracted me a lot... I can see you have a beautiful garden with lots of vegetables....Marigolds are really bright flowers and I love them.. Though I don't like their smell but this flower use as decoration for many cultural festivals in our country...

They are quite stunning aren't they?

Where do you live? I actually got the seeds for this variety from Bali, as I loved how they were used for many cultural offerings there too.

They are really stunning.. I live in Ukraine and still now I didn't see this amazing flower.. I will share some local flowers picture post soon.. Bali is amazing..

Ummm, are we really using #gardenjournal2018 and not #gardenjournal2019? I've been using 2019 all season.....

I accidentally used that as my first tag so I can't change it period but I corrected it so the second time was right and the right 1 included. What a muppet.

wow the Banksia is astoundingly beautiful. I never saw it before so thanks for sharing!!

They are astounding - named after Joseph Banks - and he had an interesting story too!

I'd find you my post on it, but steemit has no archiving system and I can't find it. Grr.

We have the same crazy "spring thing" after the intense long hot dry season, where everything erupts into flower. Banksias are amazing things, no? Maybe you could do some reading and post about their use by indigenous Australians for medicine and food? They always look so BRAVE to me, the way the flowers stand up so straight.

Those flowers indeed look spectacular. I've never seen those before...
Can't wait to see your yard through Strawbum's eyes :0)

I don't know a flower like Banksia exists until I saw your entry 😍 what a peculiar but lovely flower it is. Those kinds that I only get to see online or by reading books.

It's definitely different isn't it? Very alien, but cool!

Australia has some pretty spectacular flowers! How big do the banksias get? I'm just thinking of spots where they might fit now.

It depends on the type!! We have a coastal banksia as big as a tree, and a small one only .5 x .5 ish! Soooooo many varieties.

Wow, you Australians grow alien flowers! It is awesome.
