I know that’s the main point.
But I gotta say, I was very surprised and heartened to hear that for the entire planet Earth, outside of Gaza only 30,000 people are regarded as currently facing starvation.
“Of the around 600,000 people facing starvation across the globe, 95% are now in Gaza, according to figures from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, or IPC, a consortium of U.N. agencies and nonprofit relief groups.”
I realize the number who have food insecurity, are vulnerable to food used as a weapon, or who don’t get enough calories due to a non-medical reason, is much much high, in the many millions, and is a big issue. The number in the U.S. alone is disturbing and unnecessary.
Still. I would have thought that the number of people facing actual starvation is way more than 30k (outside of Gaza).
And most of those 30k are a single region/situation.
With all the bad news, it’s easy to forget that humanity as a whole is thriving better than ever, and the trend remains upward. It’s about to start going up a lot fast, I think, due to technology, and despite the downward pressure due to either climate change or pressure for climate change remediation through less energy use. (I am a big fan of energy use as the driver of flourishing, and hope we can find ways to increase it without excessive and externalized pollution consequences such as starvation, war, and tyranny.)
