Profile
There’s a trivia in the bio section of Steven Smith’s profile on the official website of Cricket Australia. It says, “Now a batting fixture in Australia’s Test top order, but initially made his name as a bowler being New South Wales’ leading wicket-taker in the 2007-08 KFC T20 competition with nine scalps.”
Often a trivium is inserted to ensure more insights into an individual’s life. In Smith’s case, the information served as a reminder that he has evolved from what he was when he first broke into the scene. In fact, he is way different, and for the good, from what he used to be.

Moulding a career to make the secondary craft as primary must never be a jaw-dropping occurrence. It’s only common for a cricketer to switch from one discipline to another. But how often does this switching happen at the highest level, that too with such precision that the crafter masters the new discipline to become one of the best at it?! Smith did it, with elan and panache.

He started out mainly as a leg-spinner, before he found his true calling, eventually establishing himself as one of the best Test batsmen going around. When he is not donning the Aussie colours, he plays for the New South Wales in the Australian domestic circuit.

As a promising youngster, Smith was given the One Day International debut in 2010. Soon he made his Test debut against Pakistan at Lord's in 2010.

Smith is not just prolific with the bat, he has also been famous for his all-round fielding skills – ranging from monitoring the ring, the slip cordon to the outfield. The right-hander first shot to prominence in 2009, a year before his international debut. The season saw his crack four Sheffield Shield hundreds for NSW. The same year, he was part of the Blues team that won the now-defunct Champions League.

Smith had a good debut Test series against the Pakistanis with a stroke-filled 77 at Leeds, showcasing his all-round potential. He was a part of the Australian squad for the ICC World Cup in 2011. Smith was also a part of the Royal Challengers of Bangalore in the first three editions of the IPL but was left unsold in the second round of auc2250.jpgtions that took place in 2011.
