The white house is a place we all know about, but did you ever think that it might actually be haunted?
The construction of the white house started in 1792 and finished 1800. Thomas Jefferson moved in to the white house in 1801.
During the war of 1812, the white house was set on fire by the British army. Reconstruction began almost immediately. In October 1817 President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence.
Some of the areas where haunting's take place in the white house are : The Attic, The Rose Garden, The basement, The second floor halls, The second floor bedrooms, The Yellow Oval room, The North Portico, The East Room, The Rose Room, and lastly The Lincoln Bedroom.
The Attic.
It is believed that the attic holds the spirit of William Henry Harrison. Several presidents have reported noises coming from the attic above the Oval Office. A Truma-era security guard also reported hearing " I am David Burns " coming from the attic above the Oval Office. David Burns was forced in 1790 to surrender his land so that the white house could be build.
The Rose Garden.
The garden was originally planted by First Lady Dolley Madison in the early 1800s. It is said that the ghost of Madison appeared to prevent the garden being destroyed a century later when First Lady Ellen Wilson requested the garden be dug up.
The Basement.
It is said that the basement is haunted by a 'demon cat'. It is said that the cat first appears as a kitten but as you get closer it becomes a lager and lager phantom beast.
The Second Floor Halls.
It is believed that President Abraham Lincoln, and First Lady Abigail Adams Haunt these halls. President Truman once said that he heard Lincoln pacing the halls and knocking on his bedroom door. President William Howard Taft was the first person who reported seeing First Lady Abigail Adams, She was floating through doors on the second floor.
The Second Floor Bedrooms.
A husband and wife had reported to see the ghost of a British Soldier trying to set fire to their bed. President Lyndon B. Johnson’s daughter Lynda also reported seeing the ghost of Lincoln's son Willie, who had died in the very room she was staying in. President Grover Cleveland’s wife has also been heard screaming, she was the first woman to give birth in the white house. After renovations in 1952 less activity has been reported.
The Yellow Oval Room.
President Lincoln is said to be seen gazing out the windows of this room. The voice of David Burns has also been heard here. First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln also reported seeing Presidents Thomas Jefferson and John Tyler here.
The North Portico.
The most bizarre ghost here is Anne Surratt. Her mother was hanged in 1865 for her role in Lincoln's assassination. It is believed that Anne has pounded on the doors begging for her mothers release. She is also seen sitting on the front steps every July 7th which is the anniversary of her mothers execution.
The East Room.
Abigail Adams has been seen either in or on her way to the east room where she use to hang her laundry. it is said that her arms will be stretched out as if she is carrying a laundry basket.
The Rose Room.
Many White house employees have reported seeing or hearing President Andrew Jackson, he is often heard laughing or violently swearing.
The Lincoln Bedroom.
It is said that Lincoln is often seen by the fire place in this room. There are also cold spots and lights turn on by themselves.
