C2E2 provides a place for creative people to shine.

This weekend I attended C2E2 (The Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo).

One of my favorite things in the world is witnessing people having a shining moment. If you have ever read any of my pieces about books, movies, or TV shows, you know how immersed and emotionally attached I get to the things I watch and read. This is why it's so easy for me to cry at a tearjerker movie and why I find it so difficult to watch scary films. I am just too "in" to them (it's also because I'm a complete wuss).

If that is the case when I am consuming something from a distance, imagine how I connect when I am actually in the presence of a performer. I am a sucker for watching amateurs getting their moment in the sun. When I see a high school play, sport or music performance, I imagine how those kids must feel seeing all of their hard work come to a triumphant conclusion (heck just having the courage to put themselves out there and getting through it without wilting is a triumph in my book).

In addition, I think about how proud their families and friends are feeling at that moment. I can see them beaming and thinking "that's my kid". Witnessing that courage and being surrounded by so much pride and joy really moves me.

Riddle me this... what do shining moments have to do with a geek convention?

But this is a post about a geek convention called C2E2. What the heck does that have to do with shining moments?

Every year, I am amazed by the work and creativity people put into the costumes they wear to these events. Even if the costumes are simple and clearly didn't take much effort, I am still thrilled to see how much fun these people are having.

These huge conventions (C2E2 had close to 100,000 attendees this year) are the Super Bowls for these cosplayers. Many work on their costumes for months in anticipation of these events. Some want to impress the world with their skill. Others want to see if people will recognize their creativity and get their joke. Many just want to have fun.

This is clearly a championship costume!

Every time someone stops one of these cosplayers and asks, "May I take your picture?" I can practically feel the pride and joy emanating from them.

I would imagine many think, "Wow! This person likes my costume so much they want to remember it forever!"

It is a moment in the spotlight for them.

I love being a witness to it.

Here are some shining moments I observed this year.

Thank you cosplayers everywhere for your effort, creativity and for having so much fun that those around you can't help but have it too!

*All of these pictures were taken by me (except the Riddlers). I am not a talented photographer. I use a cheap camera and just take quick, unprofessional shots that help me to remember these moments.

I really admire their effort

I'm not a cosplayer, but I want to write something for the people who criticize them, because they are "weirdos".

Have you ever thought about the hard work behind this culture?

I will give you some reasons why you should admire them:

  • They are not bothering anyone. As strange as it may seem, everyone is using a costume (your clothes), just different and according to their personal tastes. Maybe you decided to follow the trending, and it's ok, but some people want to be more original and that's ok too. It doesn't affect anyone.

  • They spend a lot of time making those customes I know in many cases they would just buy the custome, but most of the time they make it as it's cheaper and more original. They can literally spend months making a custome to look like their favorite characters, this means they are artists.

  • They are good people. Most of the times, otakus and cosplayers are quiet people who watch anime, and work a lot to save money for more costumes. Most otaku I've met are great and smart people. And instead of spending their money on drugs or alcohol, they dress up like their favorite character :)

I agree. People are too quick to judge. They are having fun and not hurting anyone. Plus they are talented and creative. I love watching people do their own thing.

just one question, why you not dressed in one of the awesome costumes?

It's really not my thing but I enjoy being supportive of those who do it.

I can honestly say I am so freaking jealous. The pictures are amazing! The attention to detail and creativity is off the charts good. I have always been a huge Hulk fan and am so impressed with that costume. The extra one with Hellboy was cool. I’m looking forward to the new Hellboy movie coming. Of course, anything Star Wars looks awesome. I especially like the Jawas.
We ahave a small Comi-can that comes to Ottawa but it’s not near the size of what you are talking about. Although, I should go again this year. Perhaps it has grown and become better with time.

It can't hurt to give it a try. Yeah those Jawas are always there. The eyes that light up are so cool. There is a charity called the 501st (Darth Vader's personal army) that consists of people in perfect costumes. They go to children's hospitals, libraries and events like this. It is a HUGE organization and is awesome!

One day I would love to do this - it looks out of this world

Apt description for sure!

that hulk one! 😂

I know! I almost opened with that one.

can't imagine him walking in those shoes! 😂 😂

Indeed a good read. I would ask is there a specific superhero or comic personality that resonates most with the public that would be both popular and long lasting not a fad. I only ask because I am looking for a cosume to entertain with. i have Santa and the Easter Bunny and have considered a comic strip or superhero personality. Thanks @hanshotfirst

Superman has been around forever. He is probably the most recognizable.

And obviously the KING of superheroes!!!!!!

I suddenly remember one of cosplayers' parade I witness. It was awesome . It takes an impressive talents and skills to be one.

@HANSHOTFIRST--hi-iam new here and am showing only my original fine art---would you please check me out? Thanks, Arthur

Very impressive! I left you a comment on your introduction post. Check it out.

thank you

These C2E2 events are really colourful, the statue, the costumes and the panacea of gje event really thrilled me, as a matter of fact
the kids really looked like they've been really fun, and I'm glad it was memorable for you

I find inspirations in costumes that are used to tell a story or pass a message across. The camera may be cheap, the shots may be unprofessional, but the pictures are great.

The lollipop queen is amazing!

Thanks for sharing these beings being. People have so many burdens in their lives that we sometimes lose sight of the pure joy which is always an option. Seeing these people chosing to be in that way is a great reminder that we can be amazing.

Yeah that is one of my favorite parts of this. People are just having fun in their own way. I'm happy they have places to do this.

When you mentioned this emotional moments you have sometimes bringing you to tears it reminded me someone. My other half, she doesn’t hold. I have a great respect. Must had been fun with all these people with costumes.

This is a great write-up...👏, I like the supportive spirit in you and wanting to see people grow and excel in what they love doing. Most times what people need to get to Zenith heights is our moral support and encouragement and we find out while we support people and they are happy, we are in turn making ourselves happy too. Your write-up is a great one that carries lots of messages to be learnt and applied in our daily lives so that we can make people we see around us happy. Nice photography and I trust you had fun. Thanks for sharing.

creative work should always be encouraged a nice initiative

That looks real great event, one must feel himself like on backstage of a huge Hollywood film production. It is really nice to see these people who do not have any problem to show that there is still a child inside of them and they still dream their dream.
I can relate it to me when you mentioning the performance of children I will never forget how I was proud of my son when he was 10 and played a King Richard :) Have you had any costume, it seems like you are a great fan of Star Wars, so may be Han Solo :)

Un post muy divertido y gracioso, felicidades, @hanshotfirst.

I'm a great fan of yours @hanshotfirst. You posts are awesome coupled with the fact that you spice it up with nice photographs....keep slaying

Yes, this is a great convention! My husband and I were Speakers at it a few years ago. He has been a graphic novelist for the past 30 years. One of the books he wrote is called "The Back Pain Avenger" and it examined how many of our Superheroes have disabilities, and the subject of disability and disability rights in society and history. We also had a table at the Con and had so many great conversations with the attendees and creators! Where else can you discuss God, philosophy, and the meaning of life with a supermodel looking woman sitting next to you with extremely long bright blue hair ;) Great to see you had such a wonderful time @hanshotfirst!

I have already done cosplay but it was manga characters or videogames. I'd like to one day do superhero characters.

C2e2 is a kickass show! I missed it this year but will definitely be out there next year. I have Heroes Con and Mega Con coming up that I exhibit at. Then SDCC. Ugh. Lol
