Eighty-two-year-old Pele, the only player to win three soccer World Cups, died today (30) of cancer at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.
He became an icon of the game after winning the World Cup for the first time in 1958 as a 17-year-old, scoring three goals against France in the semi-final that year and two goals to defeat hosts Sweden in the final.
Pele is Brazil's contemporary top scorer with 77 goals in 92 World Cup matches.
It is an example of how popular and loved Pele is around the world by agreeing to a ceasefire in 1969 in order to watch Pele play a match in Nigeria.
Pele's daughter Kely Nascimento, who gave updates on her father's condition in hospital, wrote on Instagram:
:
"Thank you for everything we have today. We love you so much. Rest in peace."
