Idi Amindi Amin, full name Idi Amin Dada Oumee (born 1924/25 in Koboko, Uganda—died August 16, 2003 in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia), was a military officer and the president of Uganda from 1971 until 1979.

Amin, a member of the tiny Kakwa ethnic group in northeastern Uganda, had minimal formal schooling and joined the British colonial army's King's African Rifles in 1946 as an assistant chef. (Although he claimed to have served in Burma [Myanmar] during World War II [1939–45], his military records show that he began serving in 1946.) He swiftly climbed through the ranks and participated in the British operation in Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising (1952–56).

Amin was one of the few Ugandan troops promoted to officer rank before to the country's independence in 1962, and he grew close to the new country's prime minister and president, Milton Obote. He was appointed chief of the army and air force from 1966 until 1970. However, conflict with Obote ensued, and Amin led a successful military coup on January 25, 1971. In 1971, he was named President and Chief of the Armed Forces, then Field Marshal in 1975 and Life President in 1976.
