Gems: Micro tasks for the Sovereign Individual

in gems •  7 years ago  (edited)

The book The Sovereign Individual presents the idea that in the future, workers will wake up in the morning, open their computers, and be presented with a list of tasks they can do and be paid for that day. These workers then choose the task they’d like to work on based on price or interest or whatever criteria they choose. They can even choose to not work at all for that day. If they do choose to work, they will be paid in a global digital currency which is accepted and can be spent all over the world.

These “workers” are sovereign – they are not bound to any country and to any workplace. They choose where to reside, what to work on, and when to work / when to take days off. The tasks they do can be menial, can be complex, but are tasks that cannot be regulated by any state. States cannot step in and say this work is not allowed, or that you cannot do it. Neither can the state stop payment or revoke payment for doing such work.

While Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum were major breakthroughs in achieving the digital currency portion of this vision – a major part of this relies on infrastructure for this new type of worker to receive and accept work, to post the output, and get paid. This is what excites me most about the Gems project – this provides a key service for the sovereign worker – one that is unique and yet to be built by the crypto community.

The Gems project presents the following matrix on the advantages over the current set of centralized micro task services.

While the above are all well and good, I think the Gems project sells themselves short. The real benefit of Gems is in its decentralized nature - that work cannot be censored and payment cannot be prevented.

This I believe is the real breakthrough of this project if it succeeds. And it will have created an essential service in a decentralized future for the sovereign individual.
