The name is a reference to pomegranate, yet, there is hardly any other gem that unites such a broad spectrum of color and luster, as well as rarity and size of widely varying gemstones.

A flawless, clear green garnet called demontoid is one of the most beautiful and expensive gems in existence. A green garnet of over five carats is rarer than an emerald in the same size.

Almandine’s iron and aluminum display a scale from deep red to deep purple; rhodolite has a deep purplish fire inside.
Pyrope is the only member of the garnet family to always display red coloration in natural samples. The name comes from Greek ‘pyropos’ meaning "fire-eyed". This fiery red comes from iron and chrome pollution.

The best proof of the garnet’s hardness and durability is a 5000 year old necklace that had garnet beads, and was found in a young woman’s grave from Bronze Age.

According to legend, Noah used a finely cut, glowing garnet to illuminate the ark during those dark wet days and nights. Hebrew writers include the garnet as one of the twelve gems in Aaron’s breastplate. Christian tradition considered the blood-red garnet as a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. The Koran holds that the garnet illuminates the Fourth Heaven of the Moslems.
