Genealogy: James Madison Staten (1815-1899)

in genealogy •  2 months ago

I'm experimenting with posting some random bits of my genealogy research here.

This individual dates back to the early 1800s and is actually one of the closer relatives I've posted thus far. I guess you could say that good information for this time period is hit or miss. Exact location and how good records were kept there plays a major role. However, the 1800s is an era when census records can be found even if not much else can. Some census data for this family can be seen below.

To be specific, Gramps calculates this individual to be my third great granduncle (with a bunch of other more distant cousin relationships).

I'm still exploring GedSite, a program that takes a gedcom file and converts it into html and The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding which is web based and requires a setup with a webserver, php and mysql. Mostly I've been playing around with TNG but I'll get back to GedSite eventually. When it comes to converting this stuff to web pages, every piece of software available seems to have advantages and disadvantages and it is hard to settle on just one. One of the things I like about TNG is how you can easily switch between different chart styles. I've shown a bunch of different ancestor chart styles already and I'll show some others soon. As soon as I pick an individual with a decent number of descendants, I'll start showing some of the descendant charts. The above chart is an ancestor chart from Gramps.

One problem with Gramps is that since I use it mostly for these reports (and relationship calculations), I periodically import an updated gedcom file output from GenoPro (where I maintain everything). Whenever I do this and generate new web pages, they wind up with different names (there's one per individual for instance). This means that past links I post may not always be current. I haven't been deleting anything so assuming a page isn't overwritten, the old one is still there. For example, an older version of this individual (with fewer ancestors listed) can be found here: https://www.megalextoria.com/genealogy/gramps/TheSkaggsFiles/ppl/1/d/efc3f1cc1dc3a774b4346873ad1.html. You can always check for a new version by navigating to Surnames, expanding the Surname you are looking for (Staten in this case) and finding the particular individual. The indexes always point to the most current.
