DID YOU KNOW?
The Bible is God’s word and being so, it all has meaning and purpose. In Matthew 5:18 Jesus says, “…until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” Therefore, each letter, word and even spaces between words have meaning; even in the list of genealogies.
The first genealogy is listed in Genesis 5:3-31. This genealogy lists the first 10 generations from Adam to Noah. At a first reading, one only notices a list of names and ages of men when their sons were born and then their ages when they die, but Did You Know that the salvation story is found in this list of generations?
In Hebrew, every name has a meaning. For instance the name Adam means man, which a lot of you may already know. Now let’s look at the rest of the men listed in the genealogy. The next one mentioned is Adam’s son, Seth, which means appointed as he was appointed to replace Abel who was killed by their brother, Cain. Then listed is Seth’s son, Enosh, whose name means mortal or frail. Then comes Kenan, which means sorrow. Next listed is Kenan’s son Mahalalel which comes from a combination of 2 separate Hebrew root words of Mahalal and El which mean respectively Blessed and God. Put together they mean Blessed God. Mahalalel’s son was Jared which comes from the Hebrew root word yaradh meaning to descend or to come down. Then there was Enoch “who walked with God and was then no more, because God took him away.” His name means commencement or teaching. Enoch’s son was Methuselah, who was the longest living man listed in the Bible, whose name comes from two Hebrew root words of muth which means death and shalach which means shall bring or shall send forth and put together his name means his death shall send forth or his death shall bring. His son was Lamech which means lament, despairing or to bring low. The final name mentioned, and the tenth generation listed, is Noah, whose name means to bring rest, comfort, or to bring relief.
Now let’s list the meaning of all the names together in their birth order from Adam to Noah: Man appointed mortal sorrow; (but) the Blessed God shall come down teaching (that) His death shall bring the despairing rest and comfort. Isn’t that awesome?!
It is the glory of God to conceal a thing; but the honor of kings is to search out a matter. - Proverbs 25:2
