Many parents and some teachers have long ago detested the teaching of sex education in primary schools, stating that it corrupts the religious morals of the students and that the so-called subject is a thing for married adults.
The insinuations about primary sex education is however myopic because early sex education would enlighten our young children about the dangers of engaging in premarital sex. The funniest part of this ignorance of sex education is that while we shy away from teaching it, our kids go out to the streets and learn for themselves; they learn from friends, watch nude TV programmes, see what married men and women do and they copy such act.
Teachers need to introduce this subject in primary school curriculum for some crucial reasons. It is because this subject is not a norm in schools, that is why we see and hear some pupils laugh and gesticulate awkwardly when topics related to it are mentioned.
In as much as this topic needs to be taken carefully in order not to corrupt the minds of our young ones, it is wise to introduce or make compulsory this subject at this early stage so as to inform our young ones about the harmfulness of premarital sexual engagement.
Sometime ago in a school where I taught, we heard the discussions of some pupils on sex related issue. It was examination period then and the pupils were supposed to be revising their books against the next paper that afternoon, so they gathered in a classroom, chatting. While they all were discussing, someone brought up a topic that focused on the male reproductive organ (penis) and said that her elder sister showed her the picture in her Biology text book. She began to analyse this male organ and examined it's usefulness with vulgar parlance which I want to avoid in this write-up. Other children listened so attentively as she spoke but unluckily for her and the other pupils, an educator(as we call them) eavesdropped and with much interrogation, the truth of the matter was discovered.
Another issue was a female student in one of the Juniour secondary classes who has been engaged in series of sexual acts with different young boys in her community. The table turned around for her when she brought her matter to discuss to some students in the school. We almost expelled her. Series of sexually related cases have been discovered in the school and it is as a result of the lack of sex education in the school.
Primary sex education should dwell on abstaining from sex till marriage. It is expected to open the eyes of pupils towards the dangers of engaging in teen sex; what they should do when the opposite sex begins to caress their private parts; when it is right for them to engage in sexual activities; how to reply neighbours who invite them into their houses and pull their immature nipples and hit their butts sexually. When these are thought, child molestation would be reduced in our society.
It is because young children have not been taught the wits and deceits of child molesters that is why they fall victim of rape. Rape is a very important topic that need to be taught in primary schools as we can see it prevailing in the society today. Our vulnerable children need to be educated on how to tackle this and avoid it also.
In conclusion, the society is already corrupt and we cannot run away or hide our young ones from seeing sex content. These sex content are shown on the television that they view, their friends talk about it, neighbours introduce them to it, when you send them on errands at night, they see boys and girls practically making love in the street, and they misunderstand the concept entirely. The only way to tackle this is to face it head-on and teach these pupils what they already know but dissuading their minds from engaging in it.
Parents also need to know the kinds of friends their children keep and teach them the dangers of early sex and watch what your kids watch at home. With this, wisdom will be the guiding light for them.
