Pessimism is embedded in the genes

Researchers have found that the levels of the neuropeptide Y molecule (NPY) in our body are directly responsible for whether the glass of our lives is half full or half empty. People with less than the magical NPY are much more negative and have difficulty coping with stressful situations, the Daily Telegraph reported.

"Natural pessimists" are also more prone to depression, according to a study by the University of Michigan. According to the team of researchers, NPY levels in the brain are genetically programmed before birth. Scientists believe that this discovery will help to develop methods of early diagnosis "Pessimist" and accordingly to prevent various mental illnesses.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, neurologists scanned volunteer brain activity while people read neutral words like "material", negative words ("killer"), and positive expressions ("hope").

People with low NPY responded to the negative words with a strong activity on the prefrontal cortex that handles our emotions. Participants with high levels of the molecule responded much less.

The head of the study, psychiatrist Dr Brian Mickey, believes the discovery is far from a cause of depression that fate has given us a heavy draw. "We hope the results will help us start assessing the individual risk of developing depression and anxiety disorder," he said. Still, it is better to know what nature has prepared for you and to react instead of losing life to misery, is the opinion of the scientists.
