red jasper 1.JPG

Once before, I posted a stone that I thought might be jasper but wasn't sure - it was. Today's stone is one that, for years, I thought might be a red agate. It's not - I know better now. This is red jasper.

The reason I thought it might be red agate is because, as a teenager, I plucked it from the water on a stone beach very close to some islands where there was an abandoned agate mine. Since my last post, I have learned how to tell the difference.

Another view and now for comparison's sake, a photo of it beside the other jasper. The other one has been coated with something shiny. This one is the reddest stone I have ever seen.
