This is an impressive eye on this agate. How it became so big is a geological enigma. It certainly begs the question of how precisely agates form and why they have so many varieties.

Agates form in igneous rocks, generally. As water seeps through the pore space of the igneous rocks, it picks up a lot of water soluble minerals. Then it deposits those minerals in gas bubbles, cracks, faults, and other open spaces in the rock, forming agates.

They can vary in value based on size, fractures, type etc. some for just a few dollars and some worth hundreds or more. The ones i post were all mined by myself and a friend in Michigans Upper Peninsula.
