Rock Collection After a Summer Rain Shows Curious Geometry of NaturesteemCreated with Sketch.

Following this afternoon's thundershowers, I was reminded that rocks look better when they're wet, so I grabbed the camera and snapped a few shots of the garden's rock collection before they could dry.

A lot of the rocks that I've collected over the years have distinct patterns, showing complex geometry and design. I have my own theory about how these patterns shaped some of these rocks: sound vibrations, creating patterns that correspond to a big noise that must have happened, or is still happening, shaping things around us to the tune of various notes:

this formation is officially known as 'polygonal weathering', but the patterns are part of the structure, not just the surface of the rock

There's something happening here which caused these formations, if it was "weathering" then that was some interesting weather.

There's more rocks out there, but it's now raining again. Hope you enjoyed the pictures, and many of these rocks I haven't identified, so if you know what they are, let me know.

From the last the second one looks like ice, your collections are awesome, thanks for the collections.

I see what you mean about the ice, it looks like it has started melting!

Nice collection :)
I believe you're fossilised plant is a tree root. I unfortunately cannot narrow it down any further than that :P

That's interesting, I hadn't imagined a root. There's a uniformity to the dimples, a pattern that made me think that leaf stalks were attached there at one time, but I have seen roots with patterns in their growth as well.

Geology is fascinating. Sometimes it is difficult to put in perspective how difficult is to create a fossil from a living organism. Thanks for sharing.

It is hard to conceive, I could just as easily suppose that the stones were alive, and grew this way, organically.

Beautiful and permanent.

Some of these I've been carrying around for years, so they are portable, permanent, and beautiful!

They definitely look better when wet, there must be a special coating you can put on them to keep that wet look all the time- there's polishing of course, but that's a bit more time consuming or expensive than I like (give me the shortcut! lol)

I have put glossy finishes on some smaller stones for jewelry, and it does work. Basically clear nail polish, as I recall, makes small rocks really show their colors, but it'll never come off! I love the lichen and tiny mosses that grow on the surface, it adds a new dimension to the patterns in a natural way.

Cool photos! Thanks for sharing!

Welcome, thanks for looking!

Thank you and good inspiration for me to take some photos too! Thanks!

I like to be inspirational, thanks for letting me know, and I'll be glad to see what you photograph next!

Your photos are super inspirational! Makes me want to get the camera out and photograph some rocks in particular! Cheers!

I get "palmwood" on the fossil at the beginning of the article. Your third photo.

Palmwood makes sense, I can see it as the trunk of a tree like that, it's cylindrical and about 7 or 8 inches tall, and it was worn down some in a creek bed since it fossilized.

spectacular collection of rocks; the shapes and design are might be the outcome of whether conditions, erosion, heat, pressure etc.

There is a certain Beauty when rocks are wet and you can see them in a different light. I have a small rock collection for my childhood of unusual rocks. Thank you for sharing yours with us my friend @therealpaul

This is why nature is so beautiful it just show the best of this earth in the most amazing way :D
