General Raymond Thomas
It was agreed the YPG would rebrand to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the US would begin funding and arming the organization in the fight against.
The YPG changed their name to the SDF in about a day, Thomas explained, saying that it was “a stroke of brilliance” to include “democracy” in their title.
The SDF now number nearly 60,000 fighters, including Arab factions under the Syrian Arab Coalition.
But as with any tool, the US are quick to drop their support and abandon ship when the job is complete, as Turkey release heavy fire on the SDF, the US pull out and drop all support for the group.
Nearly five years later, and 11,000 SDF killed liberating northeast Syria from ISIS’ hellish rule, the nearly 60,000 U.S.-trained force has been abandoned by its American partners and is under sustained assault by Turkish forces and their ragtag crew of proxy fighters — some who have reportedly fought under ISIS and al-Qaida banners.
