Keeping in mind that I am not Buddhist and therefore cannot comment on the religious importance of this area, i will focus only on architecture and natural beauty.
Although commonly referred to as simply Doi Suthep (as I just did in the title) the temple itself is actually "Wat Phra That Doi Suthep." Doi Suthep is actually the name of the mountain that the temple itself is located on. However, if you simply refer to it as "Doi Suthep," everyone will know you are referring to the temple and not the mountain in a general sense.
This temple complex (like most temples) is just a wonderful experience. It is also located in an area with an unobstructed view of the valley below, which just happens to be the entire Chiang Mai metro area.
While the temple itself is quite elevated, you are able to park at the bottom of some stairs which may still be daunting to some visitors as there are a lot of them. I love the way that this primary entrance has banisters adorned with giant dragons from the bottom all the way to the main temple complex at the top (again, I apologize if this is the incorrect terminology.)
Once you arrive at the top, provided people are behaving themselves, it is an extremely relaxing environment. It smells wonderful because of the incense and candles, and the breeze and silence is extremely refreshing. There are signs everywhere reminding people to keep quiet (as is the custom in temples, i know that much) and they actually have staff that will reprimand tour groups for stepping out of line. I normally find this sort of behavior despicable because even if you are unfamiliar with the religious traditions, you are probably aware that shouting or allowing your kids to run around going mental, kind of goes against the "rules" of any religious facility. Thankfully, i didn't see much of this while i was there.
All in all, i would say that visiting Doi Suthep is something you absolutely should do while staying in Chiang Mai especially because the price of entry is so low (it's free.) Do the right thing though, while you are there donate to the temple a bit because the maintenance cost of such a massive and beautiful structure likely costs quite a lot.
Dear @gooddream out of all your 3 photos in the post I liked 3rd one the most because the angle and frame you used is superb. I am from Singapore but planning to visit Thailand soon so can help to understand the route and location for this temple. You explained about the temple but share some route advice as well so that I can be there easily.

Even the most jaded of Wat tourists will be agog by this number one magical Chiang Mai tourist destination. You just can't beat history...to be able to walk in and touch unbelievably beautiful architecture that is 600 or so years old is a humbling privilege. There are great Wat experiences in Phuket and BKK but none can compare with the sense of age that is here. The art work and incredible teak pillars...wow...the work it must have taken to create such powerful beauty. There is a fair bit of stair climbing but please give it a go if you want life time memories

I am satisfied that every man or woman who goes to the temple in a spirit of sincerity and faith leaves the house of the Lord a better man or woman.

Wow how stunning and what a great view!
The intricate architecture always gets me with these temples, so much time put into them and the style is so unique. I love the stair cases with the dragons/snakes coming down, it looks great.
This one looks particularly cool with the clean gold. Again, I also can’t comment from a religious perspective but I really appreciate the architecture and design, it’s beautiful

I love all places with elevated views, whether it's Alexandra Palace in London, or Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles.
So I can't imagine how much more special a temple like this must be, where the elevation is in the spirit as well as the geography.
The dragon stairs are stunning, and tempt me into climbing the ladder stairs to my attic, where, my old Dr. Strange comic collection sits in a musty old cardboard box, untouched in a decade or more.
Within those pages, I dreamed of Kathmandu, monasteries and magic and Marvel.
I guess you must be a 1,000 miles from Kathmandu geographically, but in spirit, not so far. :)
