Easy Homemade Ghee from Butter recipe | Keto friendly

Hi everyone,

Before I get into the details of my blog, I want to start by introducing ourselves. We are Zack and Callie a YouTube vlogger couple who for the past 7 months have been making videos of our adventures in travel and our love of food. Since Zack usually follows the Keto diet, with some exceptions, we have a number of helpful videos, with links to the recipes, on our YouTube channel.

So for my first blog I want to talk about the Keto diet and the benefits of using Ghee and how you too can easily make your own Ghee. Ghee, also know as clarified butter is a delicious low carb, gluten-free, lactose-free fat made from butter. Clarified butter is actually a little different as it is not cooked quite as long. Ghee has been a staple in traditional Indian food for centuries but is enjoyed by people all around the world for it's taste and health benefits.

Here are a few great benefits:

  1. High temperature stability.
Now on Keto I do like to eat a lot of butter as it doesn't bother me, however if I fry something in butter I have the problem with it not holding up to high temperatures. Ghee on the other hand tastes like butter, with a slightly nutty, smoky flavor, and is stable for much higher temperatures, making it ideal for pan frying if you so desire.

  2. Long shelf life.
Since I don't use soft margarine, I would often keep a small amount of butter at room temperature for when I wanted quick access to softer butter. The problem I found was butter didn't keep as long when not refrigerated so I would sometimes end up with waste. Ghee, because the milk solids have been removed, has an incredibly long stable shelf life, if not contaminated it can last several months at room temperature if kept in a dark place like a cupboard.

  3. Health Benefits.
I don't claim to be a nutritionist so I am not going to say much on this topic other than when I did my research I found there to be a large amount of information on the health benefits of Ghee. Some of these include a high level of anti-oxidants, omega 3 fatty acids and may help in digestion and insulin stability. This is also a very pure fat so you want to watch your intake, especially if you are not on a Keto style diet. Many people who are lactose intolerant can enjoy Ghee without any side effects. Some with a mild dairy intolerance can enjoy it as well. Please consult a doctor or nutritionist if you have any medical conditions involving diary. Again I want to reiterate I am not an expert in health so if you are looking at using Ghee for it's health benefits then I suggest you do your own research to make sure it is right for you.

  4. Taste.
In my opinion, and many others, the taste of Ghee is amazing. It is similar to butter but with an almost nutty and smoky flavor and smell. When making it, the smell is so intense it is hard to wait for it to finish. This can be used in place of butter in any recipe and adds to the taste when using it for pan frying.

In this video I show you just how easy it is to make your own delicious homemade ghee. This great tasting natural substitute can be used in place of butter for cooking and baking. It has a pleasant nutty inviting aroma and many people with dairy sensitivities or lactose intolerance can enjoy ghee. Did I mention how good it tastes?

Disclaimer: Some people with true dairy allergies, not just an intolerance may not be able to consume ghee. If you are unsure if this is right for you, please do your research or consult your physician.
