Turns out the Queen was a Drone...

Hey everyone, yesterday was filled with total elation, excitement and intrigue. I caught my first swarm and how interesting it was.

I put hives out to catch swarms, one of the best ways to bait a hive is with 6 drops of lemon grass oil on an earbud in the back of a brooder box, well, I tried this with abject skepticism and to my utter shock and dismay we caught a swarm.

I was out for most of the day, early in the morning I noticed some activity around the hive and wondered if this was scouts checking out the hive to be moved in to a few weeks later. Upon arrival back home, a swarm was busy moving in, what joy!

I immediately got my camera and as I do, started snapping away as well as taking vids. I am a novice bee-keeper and have gained much advice and information from my Mom and sister @buckaroo who know much more about it than I.

I saw this bee double the size of the worker bee and immediately thought 'Queen" @buckaroo asked me if I was sure it was the Queen and to be totally honest no I certainly wasn't, but took some more epic video's and pics never the less.

Lesson learnt, I will certainly not get those two muddled up again!

The queen has a longer body and a more pronounced brown in color, where as the drones have a shorter abdomen with more black and yellow stripes and much larger wings.

These pics of the bigger bees are drones and smaller bees female workers, very pretty indeed and quiet a vicious looking 'bugger' I am just really happy that I now know the difference between the workers, drones and Queen Bee and also too happy to have caught my first swarm, first of many I am sure!
