The Lord in his wisdom examines the ways of men: "I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind" Jeremiah 17:10; and this is what happens when God sent to the people of Israel the gift of Manna in their journey through the desert towards the promised land, Canaan. The people of Israel had escaped from Egypt where they were slaves of Pharaoh, and had entered an inhospitable and desert land, they had left behind a traumatic past but the fear of the unknown made the people protest against their leaders, Moses and Aaron. The prophet Moses, despite his spiritual determination and preparation, was in a difficult and compromised situation.
The Sacred Scriptures tell us that God in his mercy provided his people, Israel, in a situation of need, with water that flowed from springs and a special food that descended from above, the gift of Manna, the divine bread.
The spiritual promises and the help of the Lord are for those who fear God, the Bible teaches us: "Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in obedience to him" Psalm 128:1. Without this spiritual gift, no relationship with God is possible. The spiritual gift of fear of God is constancy, firmness, and devotion. Just as the Lord loved with goodness his people Israel during the trip, that people had to faithfully respond to his call and his orders.
This is how the Bible tells us in what way God communicated to Moses the instructions about the Manna, these orders were a preparation for the pact that was to be made on Mount Horeb:
"Then the LORD said to Moses, ´I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.´" Exodus 16:4-5.
