I was planning on posting this a few weeks from now but with @stellabelle dropping this post about how steemit resembles a gift economy and then a follow up by @bretawarshawsky here then finally some really encouraging remarks from @benjojo about giving I thought it was a good time for this post. Awesome! I see steemit as being a bit open ended economy, but it certainly has the potential to help the idea of a gift economy grow as gifting is quite easy here. I plan to write more about is topic in the future but just some basics for now.
The gift economy is about giving willfully without expectation and receiving graciously without guilt. We usually see it in the form of random acts of kindness. I believe that in the future it will take the shape of "just doing what you do". Gifting doesn't have to be entirely selfless. If we see how deeply connected we are, that I feel good when you feel good and you feel good when I feel good, that I am you and you are me, we bypass the idea of exchange and everything becomes a whole lot lighter and more harmonious. I don't see us dropping all exchange right away in favor of a 100% gift economy at this moment in time, but we can strive to expand this concept and its practice.
What's so hard about giving?
Our social narratives have fed us many ideas that turn into deeply seated beliefs. "Nothing in life is free" Survival of the fittest, this idea of lack, our society is full of them. We think we know everything about human nature despite the fact that we have only seen it in a limited array of circumstances. We believe that people are naturally selfish and will not give when the opportunity to give presents itself. We think that no one will come to help us when we need it most. This makes sense, this is one expression of human nature that we have seen before. Our fear and lack of trust make such acts of kindness seem out of place and unwise outside of close relationships and all such acts are considered "acts of charity".
What's so unwise about giving what you have to spare? If you have too much to eat yourself, why not offer the person next to you? It's not about feeling like a good person or expecting the same favor to be returned. It's about "why not?"
What's so hard about receiving?
Most people would find it hard to believe that receiving is harder for mod than people than giving. We grow up believing in a work ethic, that debts need to back paid back, to our neighbors, our parents and our gods. Pride prevents many from even admitting when they could use a helping hand. We feel a sense of guilt when we do not pay back a favor (most decent people do anyway).
Why not just say thank you and mean it? Why not pay it forward? Why not use what others give you to do great things?
Pay what you want
I am particularly fond of this expression of a gift economy because it takes into account the world we live in today, a world that is still dominated by the idea of exchange, where we are still expected to pay for rent and airfare and education and viettuslly everything else hat we don't have the means to create ourselves. Pay what you want opens the channels for monetary abundance without forcing you to focus on making money. And allows people to give or not give as they see fit. It's an expression of freedom for both the giver and reciever. You can give freely while also encouraging others to do what they can for you as well. This makes it easier for us to take part in a gift economy without leaving others who are not ready too far behind.
Pay what you want may look like an exchange at times but it differs in that it does not carry the same expectations. That means I provide a service or something you need even if you don't plan on paying me. I may hope that you pay me, but that isn't my main motivation for doing what I do. It allows me to take the focus off money and allows you to feel free to decide how you want to reward or if you want to reward it.
What I have to offer....
Aside from what I offer in my posts, I can offer the following
language practice for a variety of languages. If you are studying and want to make conversation to improve, find me. Japanese, Chinese, Spanish (basic only), French (basic only), German (very basic only), Italian (very basic only).
advice on how to see the effects of the law of attraction work in your life, I will make articles on this as well if people are interested.
useful self-healing through diet, massage, good habits, and targeting the emotional cause of physical issues
I reserve the right to tell you to piss off if I'm tired or ignore your message until I am in the mood. If we don't take care of ourselves we can't take care of others very well.
I am always open to monetary gifts because they make my life easier and allow me to focus more of my time and energy on giving to others. That being said, this is not reverse psychology or a "wink wink" gesture. I will not expect anything in exchange from you if you need help with something that I can help you with. If you can't offer me anything or if you have someone you think needs it more, that's fine, pay it forward!
No need to be awkward about it, come find me in the chat rooms if there is anything I can do for you.
I hope that we can use this tag #gifteconomy to promote the act of giving freely and also receiving without guilt but full of gratitude. I encourage you to write a post with this tag offering what you have to offer free of charge or pay-what-you-want. Feel free to link such posts in the comments here. You may accept payment or some form of compensation but under the condition that you do not expect such payment or compensation.

Hi whatamidoing, great post! It is really good of you to offer your help...to extend a supporting hand and for you to articulate further about the gift or giving economy. When I give a gift, all I expect is for it to be used as intended. The deeper motive is that if enough of us do that, the world will change and become a better place to live. Steem is so powerful because it is frictionless global redistribution of wealth through choice, combined with accountability. There are vastly more people who would give freely of their excess than not. But there has never been a simple mechanism to keep it honest. Now there is. The gift economy is going to shake the foundations of who we thought we were, will eventually liberate us all and will set us on a completely new path.
We are all different and we all have our own dreams. I don't judge the dreams of others, I only speak for myself when I say I've lost much of my interest in realising the more materialistic side of my dreams. I no longer want and could not enjoy a Porsche for example, not whilst there is a single child out there in the world who can't eat, doesn't have an education, or is being destroyed by war. I think there are a lot of people who feel the same. No matter where in the world we are, no matter what our beliefs are, we are all connected now. Have I done much about that feeling? Not really, not so far and not enough. But I want to try to take the opportunity that has presented itself. How many of us wouldn't want to change the fate of innocent children that are uneccessarily put through the meat grinder of the current systems every dam day? So, I hope we all keep thinking about what we really want (that bloody spice girls song just popped into my head dam it!) Yes think about what we really really want ;) And if enough of us want a peaceful world of courtesy, civility, mutual respect and abundance, all we have to do is give to each other, sincerely and as you say, without expecting something in return. The rest will take care of itself. It doesn't mean anyone has to give anything or feel guilty about having more...but if everyone gives what they can, whenever they are inspired to do so, the effects will compound over time and the magic will happen.
I'd love to chat some time! Perhaps in chat but I'm very rarely in there so we'll have to catch one and other just right ;)!

Ah I love it! I always wait a little to reply to your comments so I can really absorb them. I think we have similar visions for the future. I am trying to focus on the steps in between where we are at and where we are going. I think it's really easy to forget to give to yourself when you are dedicated to giving to others so I always try to leave my own channels of abundance open, the more that comes to me, the more I can pass on to others.
You've done a lot. I don't know you well yet but I see, just the way you talk, the positivity you generate will reverberate much further than you will ever know. Give yourself some credit, I trust you will not let the ego take over.
I've given a lot of myself and would like to enjoy some comfort and stability, but that comfort and stability will only come in the ability to continue giving, as I receive. That is why steemit has been such a powerful existence in my life this past month, because it ties everything together for me, allows me to both give and receive, not entirely independent of each other, but without much need to compromise, without becoming more tangled in the world of exchange and the thought process required to succeed in it.
I'm glad to find others like myself here. We will keep each other honest and help the community to hold on to a deep sense of purpose. :-D

"giving willfully without expectation and receiving graciously without guilt." Perfect
Good post man, in this age of abundance a full gifting economy is totally possible. Blockchain tech is disrupting the old world, hopefully the new world learns from the past. Followed :)

I really like that way of describing the gift economy, i think it is my own words. You can read "The Man who Quit Money" if you want, that's the only real literature on the gift economy that I have read. These ideas are starting to converge together.

This is an incredible read. Gives a lot of micro and macro information to help people understand the gift economy. I am a HUGE believer in the gift economy and hopefully one day we can influence human nature to accept and implement this into their lives.

That seems to be what's happening, I won't be surprised if steemit shifts the crypto ecosystem significantly, there is actually content to base value in addition to the tech and speculation.

Aha good Idea. I'm always on the lookout for handy Chinese phrases.
This also sparked a speculative essay idea about how, if steemit-type communities perpetuate over the generations, will the human brain rewire to engage truly in altruism outside of family.

I complain a lot, but only because I love doing it. It's a hobby. If anything it makes me the most positive person of all, since I find great positivity in the negative...
I'll catch you on the chat when I have some questions RE Chinese (Haven't touched grammar in an age)

You are such a beautiful person ! Reading this post gave me an emotional boost. It's so simple really, give when you have, receive when you don't - of course, above all be grateful !
It's so true though that the conditioning is hard to overcome - when someone gives 'too much' many of us tend to think...what does he/she want from me? The most beautiful things in life are simple random acts of kindness.
You're a real inspiration - Mr. Whatam :-P I love reading anything you write, but thinking back to an earlier post of yours - when you were trying to find your 'niche' on here - I think you've found it!
Whether directly or indirectly - everything you post relates to the Law Of Attraction in some way - (well because the LOA is life - so all things do!)
Keep up the awesomeness!

Awesome, I guess I'm doing something right! :-)
I checked out his blog, I'm kind of confused. I'm trying to cut back on contests and stuff like that right now cause they distracted me from my writing and getting to know the people I've already met here.
Thanks for reading though
