In the Sermon on the Mount, with his new promises, Jesus fully developed the message of salvation of the doctrine of the Kingdom of God; men live in a universe governed by ethical laws and to achieve their true goal, the contemplative life, men must live in harmony with these laws and not seek the deceptive desire for happiness. This spiritual thought of Jesus was at the time a radically different approach to the beliefs of the Pharisees and Sadducees who were followers of the law of Moses, and who placed their hope in the fulfillment of a strict set of imperatives or orders. For Jesus, the law of Moses had already fulfilled its time, and a new Israel, no longer according to the criteria of the flesh, had to emerge.
This is why Lord Jesus, in addition to describing the beatitudes, to express an ordering principle of human behavior, mentioned some fundamental concepts related to the spiritual gifts, to describe the life in God's grace, and in this sense, some explanations of Jesus are close to the sapiential literature such as that taught in the Books of Proverbs and Wisdom.
And Jesus did not forget in this important sermon to mention the importance of the gift of mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) for those who wanted to follow his path. Mercy, as taught by the divine master, does not have as its goal to please others as his enemies did, who performed their small works of mercy in full view of the whole society to be praised. And so Jesus, with a few simple words, expressed how charity should be exercised in the doctrine of the Kingdom of God: "But when you give to someone in need, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you" Matthew 6:3-4.
With this affirmation, Jesus taught that men, to be blessed and prosper, must avoid masks and appearances, and give what they can with their heart without expecting anything in return, because God, who is also merciful, sees everything.
