Gifting formalities that people do

in gifts •  2 years ago

Gifts are always a pleasure to receive. Though I am not very much in favor of giving and receiving gifts. I try to keep all these formalities aside of give and take, For that reason whenever I invite friends home, I let them know that not to bring any gifts. Most of the time people bring sweets and eatables and these are the things which I am extremely particular about. 1 small bar of dark chocolate between me and hubby gets consumed over a period of 2 to 3 months, and when people get boxes of sweets, I do not know what to do with them. I most of the time give it away to my helpers, but nowadays everyone is becoming health conscious and they too do not want to take it. Also, I feel bad, that I am giving them unhealthy foods, so I avoid giving them also. Finally, it all goes in the dustbin.

I have some standard items which I take as a gift if I have to. I normally buy mixed nuts, they are a healthy snacking and everyone loves it, or I buy some organic cosmetics like handmade soaps, chemical free handwash, or bath products. What I do not use I do not have a heart to gift it to someone else also.

Last week when I had guest home, they all came with different gifts of which 2 of them gifted us 2 big boxes of chocolates. And these are not even dark chocolates which I normally consume, so I am not sure what I will be doing with them. Of which one of them is a very fancy one and an expensive brand. Chocolala is one of the best chocolate brands in the city. They have fancy showrooms across the city. Whenever me and hubby pass their showroom, hubby gets tempted but I refuse. And now we have a big gift, not knowing what to do with it, because it has some 75 big pieces of chocolates.

The box is extremely fancy, guess these are the things for which they charge a premium price.

Me and hubby decided to taste one, as I wanted to see what is so special about the chocolate. Honestly there was nothing special, it was just a normal praline chocolate.

You will see there are 4 rows, and each one has around 15 in a line.

After all it's the brand that has been built up and the charge is for the brand and not for the product. This is what happens for most of the products, the additional premium price we pay is for the brand not for the product.

At one point of time, I would get easily lured with these fancy products, but now I evaluate everything in terms of healthy and value for money. What I see is this whole gift is a full packet of unhealthy calories. Though I would like this to go in the bin, but looking at its price tag I am not having a heart to do that. What I am thinking is over the weekend I have been invited to a big party. I am going to take this and distribute 1 each. 1 a person will not make any harm then giving the whole to one.

I feel that this whole gifting thing is a formality and a lot of waste of money. If one wants to gift something, it has to be a thoughtful and a meaningful gift which you know that the opposite person will use and value. Specially if you know the person's likes and dislikes. In my case almost everyone who knows me knows that I am very mindful about my diet and I do not consume all these unhealthy foods, then what's the point of giving me such a thing which will get into the bin.
