The multimillion-dollar legal battle over bitcoin ownership has escalated, with two rival firms claiming to be the real owners, even as a New York court ordered both parties to submit to arbitration.
The dispute dates back to 2014, when two companies involved in efforts to create a new digital currency called Mastercoin launched what they say is a new organization called Omni. Mastercoin was one such institution, but Mastercoin was soon renamed Omni and became its own entity.
Omni hired some of the top developers from companies like Coinbase, Bitstamp, and Kraken to create their own version of bitcoin called Omni. But now it appears one of those developers has left the company and filed a lawsuit against the company for allegedly misappropriating their work on Omni's blockchain technology.
