Hollywood's Impact On Your Style

Hollywood can have a huge impact on our lives, right down to the glasses we choose to wear. There are entire brands of glasses that were made household names by Hollywood - how well do you think Ray Bans would be doing right now if not for blockbusters like Risky Business and Top Gun? In fact, in 1982 parent company Bausch and Lomb signed a contract with a major movie studio to place their sunglasses in movies, and while sales before that deal had only reached 18,000 units, the follow year it reached 360,000 and only continued to grow from there.

When you think of iconic sunglasses in movies, what do you think of? Certainly Morpheus in The Matrix has an iconic look, and you can even buy those specially-made movie sunglasses if that’s your style. Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator has another iconic look that often comes to mind. Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one that has never gone out of style throughout the decades.

And then there are the Aviators. These were sunglasses designed especially for pilots in 1936 that were mostly worn by military men in the following decades. General MacArthur made them famous by always appearing in them in newsreels and newspapers, but they didn’t reach mainstream popularity until Tom Cruise wore them into the danger zone in Top Gun in 1986.

Hollywood has a greater influence on our style and culture than we can even imagine sometimes. Learn more about iconic movie glasses from this infographic!
