Tesla CEO Elon Musk asked his 62.5 million Twitter followers in a survey whether he should sell 10 percent of his Tesla stake.

Musk, the world's richest person, had said earlier that he might have to pay "hefty" taxes this year, as he had to activate a large number of stock options due next year.

Musk said on Twitter on Saturday: "For information, I don't get a cash salary or a bonus from anywhere. I only have shared, so the only way for me to pay taxes personally is to sell shares. "

"I'm proposing to sell 10 percent of my stake in Tesla."

Much is made lately of unrealized gains being a means of tax avoidance, so I propose selling 10% of my Tesla stock.

Musk criticized a Democratic proposal to tax billionaires, saying it would affect 700 billionaires and tax long-term capital gains on tradable assets, whether sold or not.

Musk said he would abide by the results of the survey, however, they may be.

The survey was replied to by nearly 2 million in seven hours after its publication, and 55% of participants agreed with the proposal to sell shares. The survey is due to expire at around 2000 GMT on Sunday.

Musk's stake in Tesla stood at about 170.5 million shares on June 30, and 10% of his shares will be worth nearly $ 21 billion on Friday's close, according to Reuters calculations.
