Hidden Gems Of Magnificent Moscow Part 3: Canteen 57

in globaladventure •  7 years ago

I have been writing about my Trans-Mongolia Adventure ever since I got back home in Kuching. However none of my articles touched about food. In this post, I will write about my dining experience at Canteen 57. One of the most popular attractions of Moscow is the Red Square, a magnificent icon of Russian's fascinating past. Besides the world famous St Basil's Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral and the Kremlin Wall, the exquisite Gum Shopping Complex is also found in Red Square. Canteen 57 is located at Line 3, Level 3 of this beautiful shopping complex. (This huge complex is divided into different lines for easy navigation)

The Gum Shopping Complex beautifully lighted up.

I was introduced to Canteen 57 by Alex of Moscow Greeters, an organization who pairs up Moscow residents and visitors so that visitors with the assistance of the residents can experience Moscow like a local. Canteen 57 is basically a Soviet style self-service cafeteria. Here patrons queue up and select ready cooked Soviet dishes.

Canteen 57 is at the 3rd floor which is also the top floor of the Gum Shopping Complex.

I had told Alex that I wanted to try typical Soviet dishes and asked him for some recommendations. The following were the dishes recommended by Alex.

Okroshka soup which is cold vegetables and meat mixed with Kvas (Russian rye-bread drink)

Red caviar and salmon

Creamy mashed potatoes, vegetables and meat

Russian pie

Honey layered cake

And finally fresh fruits

The interiors of the restaurant

The dishes recommended by Alex were delicious and we had a great meal. It was a bit strange to have cold soup, and the Kvas added a unique taste. The mashed potatoes were the most creamy that I ever had up to now. The salmon was fresh and the caviar was simply out of this world. To top it all, the prices for the dishes were very reasonable. This meal is one of the best for my Trans-Mongolia Trip. The hidden gem is not only Canteen 57 but Moscow Greeters which enabled us to experience Moscow like a local.

I really like your post. Nice!

Thanks for dropping by. Following you now and will look at your post too. I have been to Pattaya many years back and would like to see how much it has changed.

How did you know Alex? through couchsurfing? Some russians are really warm-hearted, despite their no smile policy :D It's poor that their government is too corrupted, and this trains its citizens to be diligent and smart. Everything they do is for a reason. I do miss Russia sometimes.. :(

I get to know Alex through the Moscow Greeters, a wonderful program for locals to show Moscow to visitors. You are right, although they don't smile too often and often appear very business like, Russians in fact are very helpful.
Following you now as I want to learn more about crypto.

Moscow Greeters is donation based walking tour? Hah I'm sure Alex did bombard you with a lot of russian history. they are really proud of their nation even though their current situation. Its very hard to find people who is so knowledgeable about their culture down to very detail. I really love that from Russians. Yeah they do always dressed up wherever they go. Really great sense in fashion. Too bad I couldn't find a wife there haha. No jodoh haha. Thanks I'll be following you too! Keep up the great post! Do ask me anything you don't understand about crypto too. I'll try my best to answer you :)

Correct, for Moscow Greeters you need to give a donation and and a local will accompany you to show Moscow from his perspective. It was a great tour and Alex is very knowledge too. @tngflx, are you Malaysian as well?

Ya ya Malaysian. I study in Russia for some years. That's why I know :D

Glad to connect with a fellow Malaysian. You may also want to consider using #teammalaysia tag. We also have facebook page for Steem Malaysia.

ohh what will that tag do? More upvotes? :D Yeah I just joined the group! But mostly just people promoting their post. I don't see any active discussion there. Hmm.

All the food sounds and looks wonderful... Would love to try that mash potato - one of my favourites!! :D

The food was really yummy and delicious. The mashed potato was really buttery and creamy. Our guide Alex, actually licked his plate clean.

"Sasha" from Moscow Greeter looks cool!

And my Goodness I can literally see the creaminess of the whipped potato. I don't doubt that was one of your best meal in your adventure.

Do tell more of your travels in Russia! I'm very interested in the culture of our Russia Friends. We don't have many Russian Steemians here because most of them are in Golos, the "Russian Steemit".

It was a great meal, and the prices are very reasonable too.

Interestingly awesome and yummy-yummy post.
Upped!
Cheers!
