Reminiscing Global Recycling Day and COVID-19

Global Recycling Day 2020 | #RecyclingHeroes

Prior to the implementation of COVID-19 safety measures in Cameroon, we had a lot of amazing plans for Global Recyling Day 2020 and we are glad that not even COVID-19 could stop us from implementing over 70% of our proposed activities for Global Recycling Day.
On Monday 16th March, we were on social media to sensitize people about the role of recycling in sustainable development. Our social media sensitization campaign was followed by a plastic bottles drive and a plastic recycling training with the Earth Rangers of our community in Teken, Quarter Mile 4 Nkwen.
We briefly trained the Earth Rangers in the upcycling of plastic bottles into UPB Tree Nursery Pots.

And it was on Monday evening at 7:30PM that the Government of Cameroon sounded the COVID-19 Safety Alert banning all public events, inter-urban movements, international flights from COVID-19 affected areas, shutdown all schools, etc. The news was heartbreaking but at thesame time, a very timely measure put in place by our government to safeguard her citizens from COVID-19 which is now a pandemic.
So far, over 10 persons have been recorded with the virus in Cameroon and we are happy that no death has been recorded yet. 7

Anyway, we were able to have a 1:30 minutes radio program in the morning of Global Recycling Day with CRTV during which we educated the public about;

recycling,
types of recycling,
importances of recycling,
how to recycle basic items likes salt, plastic bottles, etc
the role of recycling in sustainable development, etc

Featuring during the popular Morning Highlands Show with CRTV, FM 92.5 was @mr-greens, Mr. Ebai Morris who is Regional Chief in charge of Documentation and Sensitization at the Regional Delegation of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development and Mr. Ntohban, a PhD student of the University of Bamenda.
Together, these waste management and environmental experts effectively educated the over one million people about Recycling and Global Recycling Day.
