Go Club Evening at Pub Hiidenkivi

My game with our next shodan candidate Markus, 1 kyu

We play without handicap. I was white. Markus plays the fuseki (the beginning) better than I. But white had the black group in the upper side captured.

The game a few dozen turns later

White has an attack going against the black group on the right side.

At this point black resigned. It's white's turn.

I disagreed with black's resignation but what can you do if your opponent wants to resign. Black will probably live by fighting a ko on the edge. But he will have to pay a price elsewhere. Maybe Markus was right.

Many years ago I played GO, thanks to Hikaru no Go ;)

And now that I see it, you're in the same Go club as Jaro, right?
:P

Yes.

I wish I was a vampire with infinite life. I would play GO at least 100 years.
Such a great game...

Go was one game I learnt from relating with your blog and gamer00's blog.

We play without handicap. I was white. Markus

What do you mean playing with handicap? Your name is Markku. Is it not thesame meaning as Markus?

Playing with a handicap means that black has between 1 and 9 stones placed on the board before the game begins. That way, it is possible for a weaker player to be equally likely to win the game. If one player is weaker than the other, the weaker one always takes black.

No, I'm not Markus. Markus was my opponent.

To bad that I don't have the patience and discipline for such tactical games, for that very reason renounces chess, I hurry a lot and let see my moves with several turn in advance and I become easy prey. I like these games anyway.

I'm far from an epitome of patience myself. But I've found that if I'm fascinated with something, I am able to focus well.

My go might be a bit rusty but I think black is alive in the right side. Anyhow, nice seeing people sharing go stories on steem!

It is white's turn as it reads in the caption. I think it's a ko if white ataries on the first line on the side. Black counter-ataries and white takes the ko. If black tries to make eye shape by playing on the second line, white takes the ko. Black defends completing eye shape. But then white makes the ponnuki on the third line a false eye by playing on the 4x4 point. There are no other real eyes, so black is dead. Black cannot afford to lose the ko on the first line.

I think you're right. Not sure what I saw this morning when I commented, but I probably should have had a coffee first.

It's easy to make a slip up. Do you have a go rank or rating?

A couple of years ago, I use to play from 3d to 5d here in Japan depending on the place, and about 1d on OGS. Then my son was born...

Based on my experience with Japanese players, that would correspond to 1 dan to 3 dan in Europe.

Yeah, ranks are so inflated in Japan, it's hard to know where you stand.

More importantly, they tend to be inconsistent. But I'd say the difference is no more than 1-2 stones on average. It's not so bad.

I have experienced this time and again at the European Go Congresses that have a lot of Japanese participants. Some Japanese players take the difference in the ranks into account and rank themselves according to European standards whereas others don't. But it's not a big problem as the main tournament has 10 rounds. By the second week, you will only meet opponents who play at a level you will expect based on their rank.

You should've put a cake in the middle of the board. If I'm not mistaken it's a draw in GO. And everyone is happy drinking tea with a cake!

ahan such a great game i love it seriously ;)

So, it must be either one or the other, according to you?

Google translator does a better job than that, and it sucks.
