Psalm 51 is known as the Psalm of the repentant sinner, most likely this Psalm, one of the most important in this sapiential book, has been composed in memory of the visit made by the prophet Nathan to King David announcing the displeasure of God for the sin committed to marry the beautiful Bathsheba, the psalm has a correlation with the biblical narrative in 2 Samuel 11-12.
The Psalm begins by teaching us an irrefutable truth, we are all sinners, and no one no matter how wise is free from error, that is why God is our savior and we all need his mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) and love. The Bible to teach us this, gave us the example of David, a God-fearing person, who was always an example to follow, and because of lust he sinned against the Lord.
With these beautiful words the Psalm begins:
"Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin" Psalm 51:1-2.
But faced with this situation, the sin of man, not all is lost. The Psalm, continues the hymn, recognize that the perfections of the universe belong only to God and that only he, like the sun that radiates its light to us, can transmit to us the perfections of the human heart, such as spiritual love (Agape), truth, and wisdom, only the Lord can renew us from the heart and make us new creatures:
"Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts,
And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow" Psalm 51:6-7.
Because the Lord, ends the Psalm, he does not want holocausts or sacrifices, but a purified and repentant heart.
This is how the Psalm teaches:
"You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart
you, God, will not despise" Psalm 51:16-17.
