Psalm 50 is a psalm of adoration to God, and in this song God appears to us first as the great judge of all nations, then as savior, especially of his devoted people, and finally as executor of divine promises, prizes for the righteous and punishments for the sinners.
The Bible teaches us that we must fear God and not men, because all things under heaven are in his sight, and as Judge the Lord must judge all nations, calling his saints first, with whom he made the pact, God is the most wise and the source of all righteousness among men:
"He summons the heavens above,
and the earth, that he may judge his people:
´Gather to me this consecrated people,
who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.´
And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,
for he is a God of justice" Psalm 50:4-6.
The Psalm reminds us that God condemned the infidelities of the people of Israel and their ancient kings, like when God allowed Nebuchadnezzar, tyrant of Babylon, to destroy the Kingdom of Judah and its capital; sacrifices are useless if the holy nation does not have a clean heart towards their God:
"Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify against you, Israel:
I am God, your God.
I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices
or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me" Psalm 50:7-8.
Honor God and fulfill your vows with devotion teaches to us the Psalm, like David and Solomon who fulfilled their promise to build a house for the Lord, because the Lord is generous and does not forget his faithful on the day of distress:
"Sacrifice thank offerings to God,
fulfill your vows to the Most High,
and call on me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you will honor me." Psalm 50:14-15.
Because God, as a reminder of Psalm 1, rewards his devotees and punishes sinners:
"Consider this, you who forget God,
or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:
Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
and to the blameless I will show my salvation." Psalm 50:22-23.
