The old testament tells us the story of a living God who accompanied a nation, Israel, towards a promised land, Canaan. The God of Israel is a God who manifested himself through miracles, wonders, visions, and who communicated in dreams with the prophets to show his designs. God is a God of the living and not of the dead. God is according to the thought of the Bible a pure spirit and cannot be represented with anything that is under the heavens.
And the book of Joshua tells us especially how this wise and perfect God allowed Israel, after a journey of forty years, to enter to the promised land, after having given them the Decalogue on Mount Horeb, on Sinai. And the beginning of the entrance to this land blessed by God, was the crossing of the Jordan river, under the leadership of Joshua, the successor of Moses.
This is how God, according to the Bible, communicated his mysterious decision to Joshua: "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites" Joshua 1:1-2.
The crossing of the Jordan River, which had many similarities with the crossing of the Red Sea, because the waters parted to allow the passage of men, was a sign from God: "By this you shall know that the living God is among you" Joshua 3:10.
A sign by which God wanted to show his fidelity to Israel and to be known and feared by men: "He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God" Joshua 4:24.
The Bible always shows us God, as in this case, always accompanying men to bless them when they fear and adore him, but to correct them when they go the wrong way, that is why God is a God of the living, and not a dead idol who does not prophesy or perform miracles.
