In the preparatory notes for the first version of the novel "Les Misérables" Victor Hugo expresses his concern for securing democracy: "Power, authority, dignity, independence, grandeur, superiority - everything comes from the people is returning to the people ... Democracy is the future, today's reality, tomorrow's necessity, the goal of every reasonable government, the content of any human policy ... The proclamation of democracy is not a fall, but a progress for society. In fact, only the consistent application of democracy can lead to the full rise of creativity in the social sphere.
Already in the middle of the XIX century, Victor Hugo declares that instead of a politician he prefers to be a "free man" and breaks with the Elysée Palace: Acquired from the left, because he keeps the shades, in good speech, the freedoms, as one of his own, says his authoritative biographer Moroa, he is blasted by the right hand who despises him as a deserter and puts him in incredible insults and slanders. In January 1850, Hugo himself said: "Five years ago, I was about to become the king's favorite. Today I am about to become a favorite of the people." The novel is an impressive full-fledged artistic realization of Yugo's deeply humane social transformational commitment to re-educate the authorities and to embed democracy and liberalism in the social life of his native France:In the nineteenth century we are proud and joyful to say that the most important France is her people, the gradual uplifting of the intellect, the progressive improvement of the lives of the many poor workers, their present through the upbringing of the present people, the future through education to their children. Here is a truly holy and great purpose. And here the intimate social moral ambitions of the romantic romantic are the strengthening of national unity, the establishment of equality for all before the law, the abolition of the occupational and property privileges, the reigning of his queen, Mishul. The author of "Les Misérables" exposes in the following order the topographies of his artistic imaginary strategy: To show the inner world, the essence of man, the people who labor, suffer and expect, the broken woman, the agonizing child, the hidden wars of man with himself , the sinister prejudices and atrocities, the unbearable injustices suffered, the subversive blows to the law, the secret aspirations of the souls, the vague turmoil among the crowd, all the miserable souls roamed in ignorance and darkness.
Poor starving poor wanderer Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread to cheat his stomach. They condemn him to exile in the harbor. After his release, police authorities continue to follow him. The suspect's suspicion continues to strain over the ex-convict, who lives in constant fear, feels constantly as a pursued animal. Disdained with eternal wandering and loneliness in the moments of despair, he thinks about whether to choose the fate of the real criminal. Only the Christian bishop of Ding, Monsignor Muriel, accepts the poor wanderer in his home, but Jean Valjean fails to appreciate the host's sincere benevolence. He succumbs to his wicked debauchery against the rich and carries out a criminal act - he steals silverware from the bishop's home. The gendarmes arrested him, but the merciful clergyman obtained his release by persuading the guardians that his guest was innocent. The noble gesture of the pious bishop transforms Jean Valjean, who has, in his lifetime, confronted only with the inexorable guardians of the law and the humiliating zeal of his suspicious and evil pursuers. Realizing his guilt, overwhelmed by painful remorse of conscience, the ex-clerk decides to break with his former lifestyle, rehabilitate people with entrepreneurial and honest labor and live as a decent man. He invented a new name, became known as Mr. Madlen, settled in the small town of Pa-de-Calais, gained a lot of wealth, became famous for his charitable activities, was elected mayor, and soon received the prestigious Order of the Legion of Honor .
Always had mixed feelings about this novel. Some parts are fantastic, other parts are really bad. Nice article, though!
