"Scream 4" by Wes Craven - movie review

Any review of any movie in the "Scream"series should start from the beginning. This is part of the clichés that these films parody. As they say, the beginning is the new surprising ending. Besides, it's not like "Scream " to be a standard in this category with its unforgettable start with Drew Barrymore (who, like Janet Lee and Psycho, left the scene early), which, among other things, gives the basic tone, which will move the sequence from here on - the so-called "self-referential" style, which at times almost reaches the levels of "meta-reference". And the beginning of "Scream 4" is a bit ... how to say, people who are not fans of such films may find it a little too self-serving and unnecessarily complicated, but for fans, it hits the target directly. Since 2000, new series and mostly new trends have governed the genre - endless remakes and ribbons, complicated circuits playing in five or six films (read "Kill Puzzle") - which are directly affected but in an elegant way series. From the very beginning, it is clear that we will have new rules and it is clear from the outset that, despite the old characters, it will be a new generation film. And the joy is that, however, the story remains entirely within our familiar universe.

We all know that the greater the number of extras, the more they move away from the qualities of the original, especially when it comes to many years of difference between the last movie and the latest addition. For this reason, I did not expect "Scream 4"to be in the class of the first film, the question was how it will relate to the second and third sequels. The predominant general opinion is that "Scream 2" is far better than "Scream 3", but it seems to me that things are flattened. The second one was too parodic, and it was a bit clear and elemental in its horror references, and the third one was taken seriously (though here is one of my favorite comic images - Parker Posey, which is better Gail Winders and by Gail herself), and again uses the rather irritating motif of revenge on a "kinship" basis, except that the assassin ultimately turned out to be just one man who is unforgivable. "Scream 4" ranks somewhere between them and the first film. Again, we have the satirical element, but he's far more hooked, and one does not feel like watching a parody all the time, but Scary Movie. At the same time, attention is paid to the startling moments that are an integral part of the success of the first film. Besides, we also have a nice amount of bleeding, which is more than the previous films, but far from the things that today's audience is subjected to.

The problem or the minus, because it can not be without it, appears in the middle of the movie, which is a little sluggish, and our sentient heroes, Sydney, Gail and Dewey, are generally wandering out of the scene without a clear idea of what's going on. The only one trying to do something is Gail, which appears to be an unexpected connection between the new and the old generation, although the teen "moors" fall more on Sydney. Now, it is clear to us that without the old dogs we can not have a "Slaughter", but at the same time, a new brothel with old sluts is not done. That is, the truth is somewhere in the middle, but the balance seems to be slightly sloping to the benefit of the new heroes, which is good, because it seems from the beginning that the idea is to make a franchise ringtone. Another minus that comes to me is the development of technology. It is unlikely how much time has passed and how the world (especially technologically) has changed since 1996 and the first "Scream" that talks about "cell phones" (that's the term used in the film). Now the technology is everywhere in our lives, "Twitter" and "Facebook" are constantly lurking, but with the exception of a few reminders, this element is not well affected. Still in 90% of the time the characters rely on their home phones. But we have to admit, on the other hand, that "live streaming" and the fact that almost everything, even the most intimate moments of someone's life, is broadcast 24 hours a day on the Internet is, as the Americans say, "spot on" . This is one of the most important moments in the movie and is part of the new rules of modern horror.

Sort Order:

The film can not be called terrible, most of the moments and deaths are quite predictable. And even the ending as a result seemed not so unexpected, as it was thought in the first minutes after the end of the film, although the creators honestly tried to confuse the plot, throwing the audience here and there false traces. But the fallen out guts, the sea of blood, shouts, cries and horror on the screen is enough. There were quite funny bloopers, but the overall impression is not spoiled. And of course we can not say about the nostalgia for the old films of the series "Scream", which you experience when viewing "Scream 4", because the killer copies the first story, so that when you appear on the screens of familiar moments, I want to come home and re-examine the first "Scream".

So what's new? Fear factor, maybe? Not really, for there isn't a single moment that makes you shifty. There's just more blood, more twists, more special effects, more teen drinking and a continuous use of the word ``reboot''. That's a `rehash' you scream!
