The beginnings of the fortification date to 1143, when the Hindu Kakatiya line led the region. The Kakatiya line was trailed by the territory of Warangal, which was later vanquished by the Islamic Bahmani Sultanat.
Golconda Fort initially was Mangala Devi Temple, found by Ram Dev Rao, a shepherd on a slope named 'Golla Konda' amid 1080 CE.

The stronghold was reconstructed and reinforced by Rani Rudrama Devi and her successor Prataparudra. The QutbShahi sultanate lasted until its conquest by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1687. The fortress held out against Aurangzeb for nine months, falling to the Mughals through treachery. Kancharla Gopanna, popularly known as Bhaktha Ramadaasu, a devout Hindu who constructed Bhadrachalm temple without informing the sultan at that time Tana Shah, was kept and killed in a jail located inside the fort.
