The ratio of silver to gold in the earth's crust is 17.5:1. In Roman times, the price ratio was set at 12 to 1. In 1792, the gold/silver price ratio was fixed by law in the United States at 15:1, which meant that one troy ounce of gold was worth 15 troy ounces of silver; a ratio of 15.5:1 was enacted in France in 1803.

It's quite amazing how the gold/silver ratio has become so out of line with its true ratio - something like 1:15.

Any idea why silver has been heavily suppressed as I've not come across any explanation for this?

I wonder if it's because silver is so heavily used by tech industry (think printed electronics and solar PV panels etc.), maintaining a low silver price could be in their interests.

Yes, it could be!
However, why are other commodities are not suppressed?
I think there is an alternative motive with silver.
