The White House, which previously crossed with scientists, on issues such as climate change, conservation and budget cuts, said it would create a new committee for Artificial Intelligence.

The committee will be comprised of the most senior research and development officials across the board of the United States government, working on better research and development priorities and coordination of federal government investments.

"They can not just be passive. In order to realize the full potential of Artificial Intelligence for Americans, this effort will require joint efforts by industry, academia and government," Kratsios said.

In the private sector, they will not dictate what can be researched and developed. Instead they will offer resources and freedom to explore.

CEO of Intel Corp. Brian Krzanich, who attended the summit, wrote in a blog post that "without his own Artificial Intelligence strategy, world technology leaders are at risk of lagging behind."

Artificial intelligence has been used in a number of fields.

For example, the US National Institute of Health is exploring ways of utilizing machine learning to improve cancer detection and treatment, while the General Services Administration uses Artificial Intelligence to reduce the need for federal auditors.

More than 30 large companies attended the meeting including officials representing Ford, Boeing, Mastercard, and Microsoft.

The Pentagon and various government agencies took part, along with senior White House officials including Jared Kushner and Andrew Bremberg, who heads the Domestic Policy Council..
