A man who was rich and possessed many goods approached Jesus and asked him how to achieve eternal life: "´Good teacher´, he asked, ´what must I do to inherit eternal life?´", Mark 10:17. Then Jesus teaches him that the love of money is opposed to the kingdom of God: "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.", Mark 10:21. This opposition between the kingdom and the riches is because the eternal life corresponds to the perfection of virtue, the eternal life is a result of the ascetism. In ancient times, eternal life was considered a mystical knowledge available to a few spiritual teachers, eternal life is the contemplative activity the meditation focused in the divine attributes of God, we contemplate the eternity, the mercy of God. Eterna life has also another name, the worship of wisdom.
But contemplation is related to happiness as a state of mind, the happiness of the heart and longevity. Longevity in the Old Testament is given a special name: "Immortality": "To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.", Romans 2:7
In ancient times when the average life span was 30 years, longevity was a matter of state, particularly for kings and dynasties. For example, on the longevity of King Solomon for example, depended the prosperity of Israel.
The kingdom of God is a kingdom of mystical secrets, that is why it is a hidden treasure, you never know what is inside, it's like putting your hand inside a magician's top hat : "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field." Matthew 13:44.
We serve God or money, that is the basic choice. Jesus warns us about the love of wealth, because a man's life is not assured by what he possesses.
