The Psalm 37 contrasts the righteous man with the sinful man, and proposes to us the problem of why some sinners prosper while many righteous men suffer injustice and oppression. Such are the mysteries of God's wisdom, the psalmist told us.
But the Sacred Scriptures also tell us that sooner or later we all receive a reward, for good and bad deeds, we are all subject to the law of retribution: "For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind." Hosea 8:7.
That is why the Psalmist began the Psalm in this way:
"Do not fret because of those who are evil
or be envious of those who do wrong;
for like the grass they will soon wither,
like green plants they will soon die away" Psalm 37:1-2.
The prosperity of the wicked is short-lived while the reward of the upright is the secure life, the happiness, and the longevity. And an example of this were the lives of Nabal and David in the Bible, Nabal did not want to share his wealth and well-being with David, and Nabal died of a heart attack for not being able to control his destructive passions: "A wicked man writhes in pain all his days; only a few years are reserved for the ruthless" Job 15:20.
This is why the Psalm invites us to fear the Lord and not men, to seek God and his wisdom with all our hearts, the patient and meek inherit the land:
"Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart" Psalm 37:3-4.
The spiritual gift of perseverance, the daily determination to avoid evil by doing good, is fundamental if we want to be saved in God:
"Be still before the LORD
and wait patiently for him;
do not fret when people succeed in their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes" Psalm 37:7.
Because at the end, and as a reminder of Psalm 1, there is a beatitude and a misfortune, according to the path we choose:
"For those who are evil will be destroyed,
but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land" Psalm 37:9.
