NO stranger to controversy himself, Glenn Maxwell believes Cricket Australia would have torn up his contract and banished him from the national team had he become embroiled in a Ben Stokes-like off-field incident.
Damning video footage captured in late September showed Stokes entangled in a fight outside a Bristol bar in the early hours of the morning.
The full details of what happened are yet to be determined, as is the all-rounder’s availability for the Ashes starting on November 23 — although he won’t travel with the team when they fly out of England this weekend.

Maxwell is not sure whether Stokes will play a role in the upcoming Ashes, but suggested Cricket Australia’s stance would have been far stronger than the English Cricket Board’s response to the unsavoury incident which is now in the hands of local police.
“I know if it was me I would probably have my contract ripped up and they would say thanks for your services,” Maxwell said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes with England cricket at the moment and there is obviously a police report. But I do know it’s something Australian players try to avoid — especially since the Davey (Warner and Joe Root) incident a few years ago — and everyone has been on high alert about behaviour off the field.
“One of the strengths of Australian cricket at the moment is that we are well behaved and don’t really create a whole lot of headlines off the field. That’s probably a credit to the players.”

Stokes gave the Aussies a glimpse of his talents during this year’s Champions Trophy tournament, peeling off 102 not out as Steve Smith’s men were sent packing without winning a game.
The 26-year-old’s Test record does not reflect his value to the English team, which relies heavily on him for runs, wickets and catches.
He averages 35.72 with the bat and 33.93 with the ball — numbers that are sure to improve further if and when he returns to the national fold.
As for when this is, Maxwell is none the wiser.
“I thought ‘oh dear that’s not good’ (when I saw the incident),” he said.
“What can you say really? It was an extraordinary incident. It will be interesting to see if he does come out because obviously that has been a lot of the talk to see whether he does come out.

“It will be interesting to see how England replace him because obviously he is a world class player. We saw how good he was during that Champions Trophy. He got that amazing hundred and made guys like Mitchell Starc and Patrick Cummins look medium pace which is an extraordinary effort. He’s a superstar.”
Maxwell is one of several players jostling for the No.6 batting position ahead of the Brisbane Test.
The Victorian jokingly suggested he would be a lock for the Ashes opener if he bowled “a bit of medium pace at 140kph”, but there were serious undertones to his flippant remark.
Maxwell is aware that Australian selectors have long been searching for a No. 6 batsman who can also offer valuable relief with the ball in the mould of Shane Watson. So far the search has proved largely fruitless, with Mitch Marsh showing potential but not much more and Hilton Cartwright less of a threat with the ball.

Maxwell conceded he was “probably lucky” to be selected for this year’s India tour in which he notched his maiden Test ton and hopes to hold his spot for the Ashes based on sheer weight runs at domestic level.
“With the preference of a medium pace all-rounder in Australia I can understand the way they have gone over the last few years,” he said.
“As frustrating as that can be in my position, you just have to make sure you are making a lot of runs and being irresistible to select.
“To be fair I haven’t done that over the last few years. I have not put the numbers up that warrant selection. I was probably lucky to be picked in India this year and just lucky to make the most of my opportunity.
“I’m hoping to make some runs over the next three Shield games and not be un-pickable.”
Maxwell also said that he was impressed with South Australian gloveman Alex Carey and categorised him as the “leading youngster” to replace Matthew Wade in the Test team should the selectors opt for a change.
Maxwell and Wade — who is now playing for Tasmania — have an indifferent history after Maxwell voiced his frustration at having to bat below Wade for the Bushrangers last year.
Maxwell averages 26.07 from seven Tests and has taken eight wickets at 42.62.

Gayle denies exposing himselfGayle denies exposing himself0:31
CRICKETER Dwayne Smith has told a NSW Supreme Court his teammate Chris Gayle did not expose himself to a female massage therapist in a change room saying, “that is something I would remember if it happened”.
The T20 player and former West Indies all-rounder gave evidence in Gayle’s defamation lawsuit against Fairfax over a series of articles published in January last year claiming the Jamaican had exposed himself to the West Indies team massage therapist Leanne Russell in a change room during the 2015 World Cup.
