WallStreetBets Donates Over $250K To Save Gorillas

in goodnews •  4 years ago

Members of WallStreetBets - the Reddit group behind the massive rise in GameStop stock - is using their new money for a good cause. They’ve raised more than $250-thousand for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.

Over the weekend, a user posted that they used the extra cash they made from GameStop investments to send a donation to the gorilla charity, which allows donors to symbolically “adopt” their own gorilla. The idea caught on quickly in the WallStreetBets community, inspiring other members to do the same for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, which protects two endangered gorilla species.

Tara Stoinski, president and CEO of the fund, thanked the WallStreetBets members for their support. “I was just made aware that you have been adopting gorillas through our website,” she says in a video to the subreddit users. “I wanted to say thank you so much for this incredible support … it will go a long way in helping our important mission.”

On Saturday, a friend alerted us that a member of @Official_WSB subreddit had posted a symbolic adoption of our infant gorilla #Urungano , a reference to the #WSB motto: #apestogetherstrong . It caught on. pic.twitter.com/cjL6NrZj2L
