Staying In An Epic Airbnb in Tapu, New ZealandsteemCreated with Sketch.

Have you ever stayed somewhere that was truly out of the ordinary, something you had to tell your friends and family about?

That’s exactly how I felt after I found the following Airbnb in New Zealand and stayed for two nights:

Tapu & The River Gypsy House Truck

My blogging is a little behind my actual travels due to the lack of internet I’ve faced in the Cook Islands and the Philippines, but I’m catching up. In any case, on my recent road trip across the North island of New Zealand, driving from the Coromandel to Auckland, one particular Airbnb stood out as a must stay.

The lodging was inside a converted travelling camper van, now permanently homed in the quaint village of Tapu.

Modifications had been made to allow for fresh water (piped fresh from the natural spring within the land it was sited on, no less!) and electricity ran throughout.

Surprisingly, the truck could host around people, with its 3 double mattresses (including one in a ‘turret’ on top) and a pull-out sofa bed, and had a beautifully laid out interior, in keeping with its original heritage and decor:

Outside of the van, within the same property lay an incredibly cozy chillout area, where the host family were great fun to talk to over an ice-cold cold beer and warm fire.

Including all Airbnb booking and cleaning fees this came at a cost of around £60 a night ($78 USD), which divided by 3 people made it very reasonable £20 ($26 USD) a night each.

This is cheap by New Zealand standards, especially given its quirkiness. We stayed a second night, paid in cash rather than via Airbnb, which came in even cheaper.

The Surrounding Area

My most recent post showed the beautiful stream nearby. If you haven't seen the video, check it out here.

Aside from the crystal clear stream to swim in, the seaside scenery wasn't bad either - check out the thousands of birds I caught having a rest (presumably on a migration to/from somewhere!) on the beach:

Wow! That's a great spot to spend a few nights!

I usually stay at hotels... and if it's in a cheap country, I go crazy and reserve a place with sauna, jacuzzi, swimming pool, all the extras!

The most exciting locations I've slept it was in the wilderness, inside a camping tent. We had no civilization around. Just a group of friends enjoying the scenery!

Great to hear from you @trincowski; I agree with you totally... when I’m in a cheap country I look to add all the fun little extras I couldn’t normally afford.

Currently in the Philippines (as I say, bit behind on the blog), and had a hot tub in my place last night. Loved it!

I’m planning on running a Steem competition shortly, so stay tuned in case you want to enter.

This is a great place to stay for a few nights! Actually, I could probably imagine living there as well :) It looks so homely, cozy and it's very nice. It's small but if you live in New Zealand I think you spend a lot of time outside :) The price sounds reasonable to me...

I usually chose comfortable hotels but a few times I slept in a tent. That was probably the most exciting accommodation! One night we went stargazing and fell asleep in the sleeping bags under the sky. In the morning we were surprised that we didn't make it back to the tent :D It was cool! I should do things like this more often :)

Thank you for sharing! Have a lovely day!

It truly sounds like a wonderful experience, I didn’t expect the interior of the van to look so cozy. The Milky Way drew me to this post with the header photo, that is an excellent shot. I’m also glad to hear that the hosts were willing to share their living room. Ice cold beer? Count me in!
