Pi Day became the theme of Google Doodle today, Wednesday, March 14, 2018. Pi Day is celebrated every year on the 3rd day of the 14th day based on the value of the constant π (pi), 3.14. In the United States calendar format, 3.14 is converted to month 3 of 14.
Even so, Pi Day raises the debate, especially from constituents of tau (τ). Michael Hartl, computer scientist graduated from California Institute of Technology, made the day of the rival Pi Day, namely Tau Day.
Hartl believed that the Tau-lau constants are more worthy to celebrate because they have a true circle. While Pi only represents the semicircle. Tau is actually a doubled value of Pi. In mathematics, Tau is represented by the formula 2π and has a value of 6.28.
Pi is a representation of the perimeter and the diameter of a circle. In essence, Pi is half-circle and Tau is a full circle.
Hartl has a strong reason why the world should move from Pi to Tau. "Why should a circle be depicted in two semicircles? Why do not we draw a whole circle?" he said, as reported by The Independent page.
The anti-Pi movement was started by Robert Palais, professor of mathematics at the University of Utah, USA. He made an essay on how easy it is to calculate a circle with the Tau constants.
As quoted by page Scientific American, Palais said the use of Pi in calculating the circle is very complicated. For example, one-third of circles equals two-thirds Pi. While three quarters of the circle is equal to one and a half Pi. "Yes, that's complicated," said the Palais.
Conversely, in the Tau format, according to him the circle becomes simpler. "One third of the circle is equal to one third of Tau," said the Palais.
