Google claims to have reached quantum supremacy (FT)
- According to a research paper that was briefly posted on a NASA website earlier this week, Google claims to have built the first quantum computer that can carry out calculations that had previously been impossible using even today’s most powerful supercomputers.
- The researchers wrote that to their knowledge “this experiment marks the first computation that can only be performed on a quantum processor”, after claiming that their processor was able to perform a calculation in three minutes and 20 seconds that would take today’s most advanced classical computer (Summit) c. 10,000 years.
- Google declined to comment.
Analysis and Comments
- Google stated early in 2018 that they were within months of proving ‘quantum supremacy’ over classical computers (a term the quantum computing community in general does not seem to be fond of).
- End of last year, I read an article stating that Technical University of Munich (TUM) may have beaten Google to the punch; First proof of quantum computer advantage.
- However, as with the TUM experiment at the end of last year, the problem used in the proof is likely to be of little practical use outside the lab. But that does not really matter.
- The key point is that such steps serve to illustrate the progress being made in quantum computing – it is a matter of when, not if, ‘universal’ quantum computers start to become commercially useful in areas such as drug design, chemical discovery, optimisation, machine learning, and others.
- First, interested investors should seek out targeted plays on the quantum cyber security threat (Secunet, NCC Group, Gemalto, Thales, Blackberry, Atos and Senetas are in our “tier one” search space). The quantum cyber security market will be larger ($32.5bn versus $5bn by 2028), and be meaningful sooner, than the QC market itself.
- Second, investors should seek out the “picks-and-shovels” plays on QC – namely the suppliers of dilution refrigerators, vacuum technology, laser and microwave systems (Oxford Instruments and Keysight Technologies are worth investigating).
- And third, it is possible to invest indirectly in small private QC companies through listed private equity plays (IP Group and 180 Degree Capital Corp deserve attention).
So, if that would be true, then it will be end of BTC Supremacy ?
And by the way I saw you got quite a consistent winning from @kryptogames, were you able to break into the algorithm ? @themarkymark is just behind you 😫

I would guess that's what people are nervous about.
Unfortunately no... I almost lost it all a few times and I am in HIGH losses overall. Thanks god I got a little bit more lucky lately and I have a big stack of GAMERs at least now :D
I don't remember if I sign through a referential link but if I did, the one that gave it to me must have 100s of STEEMs xD

Indeed... but I know google is evil and I am quite sure they could be the first to quantum computing at some point. Unfortunately...
