Complexity and Variety
Do you like the fantasy genre? Family and personal dramas? The epic or medieval genre? The political intrigues? If the answer is yes to any of those questions, then you will like Game of Thrones. One of the main reasons why many people see the series is because it has something for everyone. When my friends recommended me Game of Thrones, the idea of watching a series with dragons, zombies and fantasy did not convince me by itself, however, I decided to give the series a chance watching its first season, surprisingly I found a series with a story very well written, an excellent script that narrated highly intriguing events from the political point of view, and that managed to identify not only with the medieval past of real life but also with the present. The story told in Game of Thrones is so convoluted and mixes so many genres that it is easy to find something that is attractive to different viewers, not to mention the huge number of great characters, each with well-defined personalities, one day your favorite is one and several episodes or seasons later is another.
Production and Budget
I think another fundamental factor why Game of Throne became one of the biggest and most important series of all time is the level of production and the budget that it has, we are facing a series that shoots great battles with hundreds or thousands of participants, special effects, choreography, long takes, spending tens and even hundreds of millions of dollars per season, something that for very different reasons very few series do. This allows them to hire excellent directors, musicians, scriptwriters, actors and give them all the tools they consider necessary to make the show, granting us a show of great narrative quality, thanks to George R. R. Martin, and of great visual and interpretive quality thanks to the team technical and the actors.
Unpredictability
The protagonist of Game of Thrones is not a specific character, and that shows clearly and precisely in the first season, where each character is located in a different place from the complex world created by George R. R. Martin, with different stories, with different personalities, and with different objectives, while some fight for survival, others play politics or defend humanity from darkness and savages, but when history requires it, any of the characters may die, and this is due to that in this series each character is a small piece on a much larger chessboard, which allows the story is not anchored to a specific character, which gives much dynamism and unpredictability, because anyone can die and anyone can succeed, as we have seen so far. Not knowing what is going to happen next, is something that fascinates the audience, because it keeps the intrigue and the suspense until the last moment, after all, and although it sounds ironic, what people expect from this show, is precisely to be surprised.
Well, I think that's all. Trying to summarize the reasons why Game of Thrones has been so successful is something that is a little difficult, because the series has many virtues, and I think all of them have made it reap a big number of followers in different parts of the world each year. Its surprising moments, its great performances, its spectacular scenes of battles, and the introduction of very controversial elements, without mentioning that we are in a period of time in which the influence and the importance of social networks allow a great expansion of content.
