Song of Ice and Fire

Now that the HBOs Game of Thrones series has ended, it’s finally time to read all of the books. While I wasn’t very happy with the final season, I still think it is the greatest television show ever made.

If you are completely clueless, the series is baced on the Song of Ice and Fire -book series written by George R.R. Martin, the first one published in 1996. The television series had 8 seasons, but the last books have yet to be written, so the book series doesn’t yet have an ending. Martin hinted at his latest blog post that the final book (not sure if it will be in two parts) should be done by next summer.

When the series first season aired 8 years ago, I watched it and was hookes from the very first episode. Immediately after I had to google what it was all about, and found out there was a whole book series. I ordered the first two books right on the spot because I was eager to know what happens next. I ended up reading the first one, and then maybe half of the second one, before the next season started on HBO. I quit reading the books because it got too confusing to follow both, being that there would obviously be some differences between the series and the books, the latter always holds more details. I promised myself that once the television series was over, I would read all the books.

Now it’s done and I’m starting reading the books, right from the start again. I hope to finish all of them before the final book is written, so I can start reading it as soon as it’s out. Let us all pray Martin is alive long enough to write the ending, he is not a young man anymore.

No there will be two more books. "The winds of winter" and "A dream of Spring". It will be done next summer? I highly doubt it. We're talking about GRRM after all. 😅

Read his latest blog post 😁

The implication of his post is that Winds of Winter will be published by July 2020 (when WorldCon occurs in New Zealand). However, that is not the last book. The final book is A Dream of Spring. He mentions them both on a post from May 20th: http://georgerrmartin.com/notablog/2019/05/20/an-ending/

He claims both books combined will total in the neighborhood of 3000 manuscript pages.

To be making a promise about when Winds of Winter will be done must mean that he is VERY close to being finished. I suspect he has significant portions of the final book done as well but we shall see. Hopefully it is not another decade before that one comes along.

Personally, I plan on avoiding the TV series altogether until I've read the final book. :)

I wonder if it’s the manuscript that he implies will be ready, or the actual book fresh out the press for all of us. I know nothing of book making but I assume there is quite a process before it’s actually published.

In some other post he mentioned he will not write the last book before he is done with the previous one. Though I would think he already has at least the outline in his mind.

I think it’s always better to read the books first, because then you can use your own imagination for the characters. When I read these, I of course already have the images in my head.

Whether it's just the manuscript or the finished product, at least the end appears to be in sight. It would take at least several months to go from manuscript to published book.

I know that some chapters he wrote for the previous book were moved to Winds of Winter. It wouldn't surprise me if at least some of the chapters he has written for Winds of Winter wind up in the final book instead. I agree it's better to read the books first and I've been avoiding the television series for that reason. I don't know if I can wait another 10 years for the last book though :).

Tyrion was my fav 😬

Wonder why ;)

Being raised by wolfs yourself, you will probably like the dire wolfs that guard the stark children and jon snow...

The most heartbreaking parts of the series was always when a direwolf died.

I think I saw one survived w/out and ear...
But..
True enough..

it was a long wait since 2011. Now will have time to catch up on Fire on Blood. Hopefully, Martin is gonna release the 6th one, now as the show has ended.
