The importance of God's grace: It teaches us to say ´No´ to ungodliness and worldly passions. Titus 2:12

The grace of God is manifested in us so that we live with hope waiting for the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and rejecting all that is destructive, chaotic, and unjust: "For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ´No´ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you." Titus 2:11-15.
Paul asks his disciple Titus to teach self-control, godliness, and righteous living with fidelity. Self-control is one of the fruits of the holy spirit: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." Galatians 5:22.
Self-control develops progressively in us through the teaching of the word of God, accompanying the gifts of godliness and righteousness, until spiritual perfection; the self-control allows us to endure temptations, and gives us the stability of the mind for both good and bad things: "A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted." Proverbs 12:16.
Jesus wants us to be his friends, so that we can be his people, but to do so, we have to accept the path that he shows us, a path of piety, of mercy, of righteousness, of self-control. We live in a world society where it is very difficult to achieve this, because the world is given over to greed, money, and private wars that bring hatred. We have to accept the challenge to change things for the better. Jesus asks us to have the light of our interior lamp lit like the wise women who wait for the bridegroom in the parable of the Ten Virgins: "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour." Matthew 25:13.
