KALE FAIL: Root Ball Explosion (3" NFT Hydroponics)

in grandsolarminimum •  6 years ago  (edited)

Mind your root ball! I awoke to an overflowing hydroponics system after kale grew "too well." While kale is fast growing, highly nutritive, and happy to grow in an NFT, you do need to stay on top of it. What are your favorite nutrient-dense foods to grow for your family?

After doing some experimentation myself I find that placing an air pruning container in/on a water source which is float valve controlled produces optimal results for many plants. Additionally, with proper companion planting you can plant far more densely than a traditional container. For example, plant nitrogen fixing veggies like green onions in a 3 to 1 ratio with nitrogen hungry plants like tomatoes. Place the entire system in a geothermal walipini and you have a year-round automated garden that will outperform twice the space in an open field at a marginal electric cost. You could also supplement light with Spectrum King LED lights. Add a way to shade (roll-up doors or garage doors) and you can shorten your grow cycles. Additionally, if you double-panel your poly cover and blow geothermal warm air between them it will reduce or eliminate snow loads which could be collected as water.

I highly recommend organic soil (i.e. self-produced compost and worm castings) when filling the container. Another tip, the container doesn't have to be a bag; it could be a big box with chicken wire and the below fabric.
